Heat packs are available (which use chemistry to heat (exothermic reactions)). Battery operated? No.

I should have noticed your name! No atomic powered ones either.

Thanks for the info. I might be traveling across the nation by car and wanted something to keep a small tank warm while i was traveling. it could be 3-4 days until i get the frags into my tank. any other sugestions? I would like something that i can control the heat.

Use a small 50 watt heater plugged into a cig lighter inverter if your in the car. Would suggest you move it in the hotel at night as it will drain the battery after a while of not running.

ive thought about a inverter. it could work. i wonder if there are cheap ones out there.

you could buy a UPS used for computers and that should keep a 50 watt heater running
for hours. once at the hotel charge the UPS back up. but the cig lighter idea sounds good.

Good idea on the inverter. Never thought about that one haha. Worst case scenario, you'd have to buy lots of heat packs, put them in a plastic bag or something so they don't get mixed with the water. Either that or have someone ship the corals to you once you're there and have everything set up.

A small inverter is cheap. See here. http://cgi.ebay.ca/New-Belkin-F5C400-50W-50-WATT-DC-12V-AC-115V-INVERTER-/250763145125?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a62a5efa5#ht_2030wt_914

I think the cig lighter is the way to go, but they are still a decent amount of money. 50+ dollars.

You are moving across the country (thousands of dollars) and you are complaining about a $50 inverter to keep your corals alive?

Im not moving across the country....i never said that. I travel for work and sometimes it would be nice to be able to pick up corals along the way. LFS seem to always have the same stuff. Its nice to get some new selection.

You should be able to find a 150w inverter for less $20. But I thhink that would be the best be.

Dont some of the larger heat packs last for several days? May be an option.
