I'd like to start a thread for sharing Tips, Tricks, settings, ideas, Do's & Don'ts.
Let's keep this strictly regarding the Light Studio App. I don't want to hi-jack the awesome Illumina threads that helped me decide to make the Illumina investment in the first place.
First off...It would be nice to have a light studio manual. If anyone knows where to find it...Post it here.
It would be cool to share setting files. PM me for my email address. I'd like to check out your settings.

I'm trying something in expert mode and can't seem to make it happen. Here is my idea.
Blue & Royal blue West to East Triangle switching which is brighter every half hour throughout the day.
BUT.....Have the White LED's do a West to East "POINT" setting.
I've tried clicking on the points for specific colors. It appears that you can select Concurrent, E/W Triangle, Point, etc... for each color but when I upload and run the light preview, They are all in the POINT setting.
Can someone else give this a try?

Needs some help in expert mode...
I have set up my sunrise from east and sunset from west.
I have also set the lunar calendar. Everything seems to be working with exception to the moon light which remains off.
I set the days to full moon, however the number seems to fluctuate every time I open the time/date setting. In the vertex manual it makes reference to the fact that if the moon light does not come on it might because it is close to full moon day??? This does not make sense. Shouldn't the moon be getting bigger, therefore brighter, closer to a full moon?

Sambo5860,
do you have the fixture set to one of the Moon options? And is the calendar properly set? Do you have the colour mix (Compose Moon Color) set? If this is at zero, you won't have light.
Just naming the obvious.
Why is the Sunset from West? It should go from East TO West, the same as Sunrise.

Hi Jamie
Thanks for your reply.
I have the light set to Lunar Cycle. I have set the calendar properly and the have checked the Colour Mix as well, and this too is set. It was not at zero but at 30% as indicated on the graph.
I have the moon rise set at 6:30pm. However, I have noticed that the moonlight does not turn on at 6:30pm. I suspect that this has something to do with the Lunar Cycle Program, because tonight I checked on the tank at 10:00pm and the moon light had come on in the first console at the correct brightness. So it seems to be working.
It must be that it takes a few hours for it to rise. I just thought maybe when I Download the settings to the Desktop, the graph should show me what time the moon will rise?? But this does not seem to be the case.
The Sunrise is in the east, illuminating console by console until all are on.
Sunset is in the west, dimming console by console from East to West until all are off.

Hi Stephen,
why not try the time lapse, thingy, sorry cant use correct terminology as i just packed up my light and put away until tank arrives, but it is the second option down it will show you the full cycle of what you have set in i think a 3 minute window

Stephen, if you are in the rising moon cycle, the moonlight will start dim and get brighter. I've not played wiht this, yet, so I can't say how much effect it has, but it could be the LEDs are so low they are not easy to see. Something is certainly working, just not as imagined/expected. I think playing with the variables over the next days will give you a better idea of the functions and what they actually do.

I am now frustrated and having trouble connecting to the light. I went out and got a USB extender but still no luck. I was able to connect in the past but lately the application just keeps failing mid adjustments. Maybe the wrong thread for this, but any suggestions? I am on a Mac
A few issues i've run into:
I cant get this running on a mac book pro(2010), had to boot into windows for things to work. If some one knows how to manually build or install the driver it needs please let me know, the bash script that comes with the install does not work for me in OSX.
Last night I managed to FUBAR the light some how with light studio, my light is serial number "3" and was running the original firmware (1446 i think). Some how the light was only using pad 0 and 5 (has 6 pads, 0-5 so the first and last were the only ones working).
After a bit of a panic, rebooting the fixture(did not help) and looking up how to emergency recover each pad(far too much effort) I decided to try updating the firmware to the latest (1631). after ~5 min of updating pad 0 (only) the fixture seemed to reboot, I uploaded a known working save and the light worked again, it even ramped down in east first (something that it would not do with 1446)
Radio channel is set on the light fixture(took me a bit to remember this), keep it at 0 to be able to update firmware!
Be as close as possible, I get -56.0db sitting on the sofa next to the tank, if I move 5' to the other side of the sofa it drops to -70.0db
After firmware updates you need to re-auth the fixture by confirming the connection on the fixture, then look for it again in the program.
Adjusting colors/ramp in expert mode: use the up/down arrows after selecting the point, makes life easier.
Lastly the fixture is complex technically, It's possible to disable some or all functionality through improper use of light studio as I some how managed to do. Always keep a save of your program in light studio and understand how to recover the pads if something goes wrong (recovery info is in the firmware update file thats downloadable from vertex, in the txt file)

I've checked-up on the Mac problem and it is real. Apparently, the latest Vertex up-date 1.6 is no longer compatable due to an update in Mac. The problem is being worked on. This is why it worked before and now isn't. More, I don't know and, frankly, I'm not personally Java compatable and can't read that stuff.

It seems like an issue with the driver as I can launch the program with out issue, I've emailed vertex RE the upgrade path from Philips to Cree xp-g LED's and will ask about the OSX issue once I get a response back.
On the upgrade path note, the fixture I have has 2x GS220A24-R7B 221w @24v ballasts. With the over capacity i cant see why this would be an issue, can some one with a 260 model verify the ballast type?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Vertex Illumina for my new reef tank. However, I use a Mac exclusively and hopefully by the time I get this up and running, any MacOS issues should be resolved.
OTOH, I was wondering if the Vertex Light Studio would work with Windows 7 or just XP? I have XP with Fusion emulator, but need to get Win7 for work which I'll install as a bootcamp volume.
Thanks everyone.

I'm using Windows XP.
Some interesting notes since I've been using the Vertex Illumina 260. many of the corals are changing colour to brighter turqouises, from greens, and pinks are really developing, which I didn't expect, as there is literally no warm spectrum in the tank now. Also, many Montis are developing coloured edges and some are changing polyp colour. It is really quite amazing what spectrum can do.

What white-blue-royal blue intensity do you use?

I'm still experimenting, but, with a 70cm depth, I like 100% both blues and between 50-60% white. I am running a long sunrise-sunset, 3 hours, as I like seeing the slow changeover from actinic to daylight. I may change the settings in a few weeks to a miday white of 90-100%, but just for 2-3hours, plus add a few storm clouds to break it up. What i really like about this unit is that is never gets hot, no matter how high I run the whites. Plus, it can apparently sense overheating and will automatically reduce the intensity of the whites, should the lamp get too hot. With these fans, which also run at different speeds according to heat load, I can only imagine this function tripping in during an extremely hot Summer or if the fans were turned off via the controler by the aquarist. Nice to know stupid moments are being thought about!

This is my current setting after many changes. I may still need to tune down the whites as there are too much algae on the sand bed now.
The reason that I have more whites than blues during the day becasue I usually am at work at that time and don't care too much about the look. But may be I am wrong because of the spectrum thing.
Kolognekoral
03/31/2011, 01:12 AM
I would set the whites at 50%, especially if the aesthetic is not important. The corals actually need the blue spectrum and any radiation over 500nm or so is not important to them. Higher algae, on the other hand, use light in the red spectrum, as do see grasses. Cyanobacteria uses light from around 510-600, which is right in the middle of our visual spectrum. probably one of the reasons it is such a problem for most aquarists, we see best in this slice of the spectrum and most traditional lighting is oriented to this part of the spectrum, plus the actinic waves.
With the advent of LED lighting, we can truly customise the spectrum. We will need to rethink our attitude to proper lighting. Much of what we have come to accept as desirable or normal was due to not being able to have it otherwise.
Adjust the whites to 50% and see what changes.
notclear
04/01/2011, 05:07 AM
I've set the whites to 65% instead of 50% as I don't want to reduce it so dramatic.
At the same time I also increased the blues and royal blues from 70% and 80% to 80% and 90% respectively.
Let's see in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the advice.

I had a similar problem. Your Mac may have the FTDI USB Serial driver already loaded thus preventing the VertexDesktop app from loading it to talk to the Vstick.
Run the following in a terminal window to unload the driver then run the Vertex Desktop app.

OK, had you programmed anything into expert? If not, copy the program from Custom into Expert and edit it. There is a button 'Custom Copy'. I found this the easiest way to get started. I'm not sure if it is, but Expert behaves like a sub-program of Custom.

I am wondering what moon light settings other people use in terms of light or light combination and intensity.
I am using the blue lights and set at only 5% and using Lunar Cycle East First mode.
The reason why I am using blue instead of royal blue is I am using more royal blue than the blue on the day schedule and try to balance a bit on the LED usage.

I got the Vertex light and it is amazing! However I'm really scratching my head in expert mode. For the life of me, I can't change the setting to "West first Triangle" (starting point cable side- going towards the display side)... No matter what I do in the day setup it, and no matter how many times I upload with success, it keeps either doing concurrent.. or if I load GodFather's program East to West... even if I try to change it to West to East.
What am I doing wrong here?
By the way... Red dot is inside the "West first triangle" button every time I upload.

That means your v-link stick is not communicating with the light fixture. Try to use a USB extender and place the stick close to the light fixture's controller side to increase the wireless signal strength.

Just an update - I had to modify my canopy, but have the fixture fully installed now. I wasn't waiting long enough at first for the ramp up time. This fixture is awesome! The colors are intense, the white is just as good as my T5's were, and the coverage is complete. I've seen quite a few other LED setups and am very impressed with the Vertex! Ok I've had the light for a few weeks now and have gotten really familiar with programming it. Now I have a few questions/potential problems I need help with:
1) Is it normal for the time to not move real time? I'm talking about the display on the actual fixture.
2) I've noticed recently that my "thunder"/lightning storms haven't been activating. Of course I'm not around all day to really take note... so I thought I'd open the light studio and do it manually using the Special Settings Tab. I click on "Do Lightening" (that's how it's spelled in the program) and the fixture does nada.
BTW, my Vlink is connected and in "green" status.
What's going on with my fixture?

My light fixture is coming in today, and I am trying to decide how much intensity to start off with. I had a current USA 2 x 250w 14k Pheonix with 4-54w Giessman Super Blue and Purple+ bulbs. The MH's on this fixture sucked because the reflectors are so small. So I wasnt getting very good spread. So should I start the whites off around 30% and the Blues around 45%. Any input would be appreciated...dont want to fry all my SPS.

I went from 2x150w blv bulbs to vertex 1200, it is the 200 version not the 260. I started at 45 white/ 50 blue and 50 royal. After a week I upped the white to 50 also. Everything is happy, mushrooms are open, they are first to close if light is too high.
If you have the 260, remember the whites are 30% brighter!!
A couple of my soft corals sulked for just over a week, but are happy now. Nothing is in decline......so far so good....

Ok....got it up and running. But ive noticed that when I transition to the moonlights it takes forever for them all to turn on. The rise and set time are set for 1hr. But only one pad will be lit up during that time and looks dark. I know i can increase the intensity through the moon composition. But i figured that the 1 hr rise and set time would be for all of them to turn on and off. Throughout the night they will all slowly turn on and off.

I keep mine on the lunar cycle (based on the amount of days you enter in till the full moon in time/date settings). I do this because I want to mimic what the moon is really doing outside in the real world. I would like to think it makes a difference.
As for the East to West, or West to East I have it set go the same direction that I have my day cycle going. I used thedogfather's settings as a baseline for my settings btw.

I've just got round to playing with my Illumina SR200 and must admit I'm well impressed not that I've been able to achieve much to date. Over here in UK not many reefers have seen the light (sorry) and switched on to Vertex yet, possibly the prices here but what I've seen well worth it.
I'm really struggling with a number of things in relation to the desktop control panel, and the manual in my mind is less than helpful. Yes it show the different options but doesn't explain how to use then even when trying to use the custom mode I'm constantly getting error messages in saying that the set periods are too close. Can anyone provide a bit of an idiots guide or point me in the right direction, I know this unit is capable of providing what I want but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated in getting it to do what I want.
cheers
edit - My remote firmware is 1695 but the latest on the Vertex site is 1631 which is latest as you'd think higher number is newest

Rockpoolie, did you fix the problem?
V1.695 has been posted on Vertex's web site. Any one has any idea on what are the changes?

Hello new vertex illumina user here. I downloaded all the files into my computer and I am not getting a connection to my lamp. When I run the vertex light app I get "No Lamp" at the bottom.
I am using a 2009 Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. I do have Windows 7 in bootcamp, I may have to resort to this if I cant get my mac running the software.
Anybody using the software with a mac? Should I try this command posted earlier,
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext
Thanks

Ok I was able to establish connection with my Mac. The connection is spotty and you do have to be within 5ft. I also was successful at uploading my color programming but noticed I had to do it when a connection was established at the bottom. If the bottom read "No Lamp" and I uploaded a new program, the programming would reach an error. So upload your programming when you see a connection at the bottom of the screen when running the vertex app. Hope that helps somebody.

From Vertex webite, they have the v-link firmware 1.695. I understand that this firmware is for the USB V-link stick. Can anyone let me know how to upgrade the firmware of the v-link stick?
If I go to the desktop software, summary, update firmware, it is for updating the light fixture, but not the stick itself.
Thanks in advance.

Hi. I finally installed my desktop software and I have a question already. I can't tell if I'm using the latest version because the user manual shows the Special Settings page to have a "Fast Motion" button; however, my software has a "Light Preview" button. Since I'm still learning the software I can't tell if the functions are identical because it doesn't look like I am getting a 3 minute condensed program review. Any ideas?

Light Preview is the later. You can also click on the About (or ?) icon to see the software version.

You will need to experiment it but I believe you need to tune the lights way down first and see the corals' reaction. For example, RB and B - 50 %, white 30%. UV -20% (you may not be able to turn the UV on right now until Vertex releases the firmware for it) and Red 15%.

With the ’Ambient Light Range’ you can select LED-pad-area that shines during the night.
With ‘Apply Ambient Range’ this setting will be transmitted to the device.

Does that mean the further the "Ambient Range" tabs are apart, the wider the coverage you'll get with the moonlight? There is not any icon of the led pads on the screen. I hit the "Moon" tab and proceeded to compose colors, but I didn't see any lights at all as I adjusted the intensity level. I was able to do expert programming just fine for the day setting. What am I doing wrong for the moon setting?

Can anyone point me to a manual for the Vertex desktop? I've found the firmware and have been playing around with the settings and all and think I get the basics for a program, but when I go to close it gives me a message saying actual startup settings not set or something along those lines. I believe all you need to do is hit the "Start up setting" tab to the right of the right of the "Day & Moon Program" tab before quitting the program. This should store the fixture's setting to its flash memory.
I tried to upload the pdf manual here, but it said that I've exceeded the forum's limit for this type of file. If you really want it, PM me and I'll send it to you in an email.

My understanding is Yes (I have never tried though): if the slider on the top is at the farthest left and the bottom one at the farthest right, the moonlight covers the entire length of the fixture. And if now you just move the bottom slider to the middle, then the moonlight only covers the left to the middle of the LED fixture. So basically moonlight covers the area of the fixture in between the two sliders.
You can experiment this and post the result, thanks.

This explanation makes perfect sense based on my experiments last night for the first time after getting the light. I was playing around with the sliders and couldn't figure out why some were on and some were out when I was moving those darn sliders around. After reading this description that is exactly what was happening, good catch!

Thanks for your help. You are right. The 2 slider tabs determine how wide the moonlight coverage will be once you click on the "Apply Ambient Range" button. The reason why I wasn't getting any moonlight was because I had both slider bars together one on top of another.

Hi Jason,
I have mine programmed with 8 clouds at a maximum duration of 4 minutes for each cloud and a 10% dimming on the lights. I'm not using the lightening feature at all. I'm guessing that the clouds will be random throughout the day as I did not see an option where you can specify the time frame for the clouds to appear. I would have liked them to come on during the most intense lighting period of the day. I hope that helps. If anyone on here knows more about this program, please chime in.

I am not 100% sure about your question.
If you already have programmed the schedules, etc., then just go to File, select Upload Program, the program will then be uploaded to the lighting fixture.
However, if you meant that you have got a configuration csv file from someone, then you just have to first establish connection between your fixture and your computer, click on the Day button, then from File, select Load Settings, then browse to your csv file, click on Open to load the program file to your Studio Application, from there you can modify the schedules, etc. After that you just need to Upload the Program to the fixture.
But be careful with your Desktop version, you will want the file you got from someone was generated with the same version as yours.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I have similar questions as David !!!
"Weather control Cloud questions"
I would like to know how it really works.
- If I put six cloud by day, I guess the 6 clouds appear only during the period when the LED are on.
- Is that these clouds are distributed beyond following day Period divided
by 6?
- Finally, if you put "maximum cloud dim out" : 20%, I guess it reduces the intensity of all LED 20%
Ex: White = 60%> 48%
Blue = 75%> 60%
- I would have liked them to come on during the most intense lighting period of the day.
Thank you for your answers,

Notclear, you have owned this fixture longer than most of us on here and hopefully can share some information about this. Is it possible to program the clouds to come on during the most intense lighting period? Stephane (Medox) and I have the same question, but nobody responded. Also, what is the function of the "Wave Width" tab in the Special Setting mode? Thanks.

I do not set the clouds so I am not so sure but I doubt you can do that.
As for the wavelength, based on the change log on Vertex site, it says you can specify the optical length of the wave. But I have no idea on exactly what does this mean. Sorry.

Good news, I got the answer from Jamie of Vertex regarding the Wavewidth:
Let me try to explain this clearly. The Wave is the flowing change of intensity from pad to pad, left to right or right to left. It is associated to the West Point First, West Triangle, etc. I often refer to this funtion as a 'walk'. Our programmers have dubbed it 'Wave'. Very poetic.
If the Wave is at one, in any given wave function, the first pad will reach 100% of the programmed function (dimming, storm, etc) before the next pads starts with the function. When set at two, then the second pad will start when the first pad has reached 50% of the programmed function. With 4 Wave, the second pad starts at 25% of the first, the second at 50% of the first, the 3rd at 75% of the first, etc. I hope you follow this.
This can give a soft change of intensity or a strong change during a wave. This designation will be integrated in all wave functions. One cannot have a Wave 1 for moon and a Wave 4 for daylight (not yet, anyway. Could come, who knows). Your wave number cannot be greater than the number of main modules, obviously.
Other than the optical effect created, I find the wave allows a more natural sun transit effect, which lights the corals at changing intensities from different angles. Pigment and zooxanthellae distribution is thus more even in the corals tissues and you avoid that coloured top/browned underside effect.

It seems that the "expert mode" is a sub program of the "custom mode". Your best bet is to program your light using the "custom mode" with the "compose color" tab along the with the graph on your screen. Upload the program and then click on the "file" tab and select "copy custom" from the drop down menu. Then, fine tune your program in "expert mode". Your sunrise and sunset program can now be done using different points on the graph. I hope that helps.

I just want random clouds through the day. I want them to start at one end of the fixture and finish at the opposite end. I'm not really sure about the wave setting I'm thinking this means that two pads will finish there cycle before they move to the next.

Average clouds per day 8
Maximum cloud dim out [ %] 50
Maximum cloud duration [min] 3
Lightening Probability for a cloud [%] 0
Average lightening per cloud [n] 0 `
Wave Width 3
With this setting I could not see any cloud cover. I later changed the dim out % to 100 and eureka I’ve got cloud cover moving across the tank. :lol2:

Hi all,
Just received my SR 260 and I am able to set the day time but when I try to set the moon light I cannot seem to get the times to come up. I used expert in the Day light area and all times are set but in moon light I cannot get the times to come into play. Also when I try to exit the VLink it tells me the Start Up Settings are not set. They are for the day but I guess the moon is not. Help please. Thanks! Dave

Ok - I see where it sets my moon light intensity on what colors I used (50% RB). But its at 50% all day and night (24 hours). How do I get it so it goes to 0 at 8 am through 8 pm and then grows from 8 pm through the night and goes back down buy 8 am? Thanks! Dave

I don't have the software here but you must have selected Moon Light, you should select the other option I believe called Lunar Cycle or something like that, from there you should be able to do what you indicated.

After you set the moon settings, you should click on the Apply moon setting button. then you need to click on the Start-up setting button which will store all fixture settings into its flash memory so the settings are saved against power failure.

Any thoughts on the following;?...
I received my new Red and UV modules today. Installed physically no problem! Updated firmware on vstick without an issue. Started to upgrade firmware on controller, got to 17% and errored out. Now the led module closest to the controls just continually blinks. I can still view the controller in Vertex, but can't upgrade the firmware... Ideas? Thanks!

Reset the power and then start to update again. But before you do that make sure that the communication between the stick and the fixture is very strong, like under -60. I literally placed the stick just underneath the fixture's controller module by the use of a USB extension cord, I usually get -46 signal strength.
If you get the error during the update, just click on the restart button and then it will restart the update on the problem module.
In the past like about 2 years ago, this Restart button is not in the software, I had to remove the splash guard and physically pressed the reset button on the LED pad. There is an instruction file when you download the firmware, it tells you how to physically reset the pad. But I doubt that you need to do this any more.
There is one guy on another forum asking for help in updateing the firmware and he got a lot of errors as well. I pointed out the communication is the key but I believe he just ignored my post and kept asking questions for the next few days before someone again pointed out the communication issue!

Which firmware are you on? I have the same thing as NotClear the Restart button is there. Pretty easy in case of error.
As stated the connection is the key.
USB extenders are cheap and readily available. Having one will make things much easier.
I wish they would include one in the package.
The Comm is via ZigBee which does have a good range but I guess dependent to the ambient signal interference.

I don't think mine is a connection issue. I am literally on top of the controller. The issue is that I select firmware update within Vertex Desktop and select the .bin file and then it just goes right back to the Vertex Desktop. It never brings up the Firmware upgrade module... Same results on two different laptops.

At the bottom of the desktop screen, what's the signal number or do you see No Lamp instead?
Rxfoote

I shown nothing - bottom just shows Vertex Systems. I don't see a lamp strength anywhere? When I go to Summary - I show my controller, but the Firmware Version now just shows a 1... I followed directions exactly and literally had the adapter on top of the controller on the first attempt.(I'm an IT guy so I do stuff like this all the time...) - I have tried reset options with same results. Thanks for the help!
I'm pretty sure I don't get the lamp indicator because the upgrade firmware module never comes up. I've tried now from 4 different laptops, all with the same results. When I click on firmware update, I select the file and it just goes back to the Vertex Desktop. The Upgrade Module never comes up...

I find that if you maximze the desktop software screen you will see the signal message at the bottom.
Also try to place the v-stick underneath the controller pad instead of on top of it.

Hi Notclear- question for you back on the moon light. First thanks for all the help. Ok so here goes. I set up in expert all my times from sunrise to sunset and all seems to be going just as planned. Then I added the lunar moon trapezoid and the graph looks just fine. Every thing is moving along and at 10 pm at night all daytime graphs are a zero. But at 9 pm while it only has a bit of royal blue and blue to burn off until 10 pm, a bank of white lights goes on - I cannot associate this with anything in the day or moon settings. Any thoughts? Thanks! Dave

If the graph looks ok but the light displays otherwise, then I think a power reset of the fixture may fix it.

I'm having the exact same problem as Rxfoote. How exactly did you solve this? I unplugged the unit, held the second button from the right and plugged it back in. The blue lights flash indicating it's ready to start the update again, I'm able to connect to it when I click on connect to V-stick, I see Firmware Version 1, I click on Firmware update and nothing happens, my laptop is on the tank, basically under the fixture and nothing happens. Any ideas?

So I'm in the process of updating the firmware. I held down the button on the pad next to the auxiliary pad plugged it back in and started the update. Only the first pad updated, it was the only option, and now I'm running the update again on the rest. So why did it fail the first time? It errored out and I clicked update again as per the instructions, but I got a new error and bricked the controller. I was about six inches from the light when updating the firmware. If the signal is so weak whats the point of the v-link, why not run a usb to it.

When you say "reset" is that equal to what the instructions are stating as 3-7-2 or is it depressing a button on the led pads? If the later, where is the button? I just bought the SR260 (2 of them).
Thx.

From the manual you unplug the power, hold in the 2nd button and keep it held in while plugging it back in.

I actually depressed a reset button on the led pad. I pressed them all at first, because I was unsure of which one needed the reset. But what actually worked was pressing and holding the pad connected to the UV module. By doing this it bypassed the new module. The button had to be pressed while powering up the fixture until the firmware update started at which point I released it. Where I think I made a mistake was trying to update the firmware after installing the module but not really sure.

Hi,
If possible I would need some advice.
I've purchased two vertex modules and the programming on the module itself was perfect and all worked well.
Because I put some UV aux modules I had to do a firmware update with the latest firmware 1968 on the desktop 1920. That worked nicely so I started programming the lamps. From then on the modules didn't follow the settings anymore...in custom mode it starts dimming (sunset) and then the whites are going back on and blues almost completely down (= yellow color), one pad has other colors then the others and then it changes again, in the expert mode I've have the same problems. So I put on the default mode but it doesn't go out (starts dimming until a certain point).
I tried programming from the desktop and on the module itself...but no use.
So I did a factory reset....same problems:mad:
What can I do, please advice?
Best Regards and thx in advance,
Kurt

Does anyone know if Vertex has any plans to fix all these issues once and for all with a new firmware that actually will work like a high end fixture should work?

I think the latest firmware has fixed the UV issues (actually the composer issue) and most people run their UV modules OK won't post or read here. There is still a bug on the demo program though. Vertex is working on releasing a newer firmware within days, according to them.

I received the latest firmware update 1974 and downloaded that one.
The lamps works well except the moonlight (bug will be fixed when the firmware will be officially released) and the UV module.

I don't understand why the V1968 works on my fixture together with UV (no Red) but some others seem to have problem.

I had a similar problem. The issue was I did the firmware update that only updates the first pad and not the complete update that updates all pads. In this instance the complete update was required. Note that the complete update could take 45 minutes or so depending on the length of your fixture!

I have had no issues with my unit other than I didn't run the "complete" firmware update the first time around.

Hey Kurt- You have an update listed as 1974? I only see 1968 as the latest. Where did you get 1974 update?

Thanks for responding. If I do a "complete update", would I still have to specifiy the "Range" for the light pads? Also, Notclear and Luxo have both mentioned something about a "Restart" button if the update doesn't go through. I don't see the "restart" button when I hit the firmware update tab. I just have the "Start" button in a pop up window. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

You don't have to specify the Range for Compete Update as it will update all pads.
The Restart button only shows when there is an error during the update.

Thanks Notclear. So, theoretically and hopefully practically as well, when I do a complete update, I'm good to go with the UV modules. Right? Is there anything else I need to know when installing the modules and making sure they will work properly after installation?

It should work as it works for me using just the published V1968 firmware. I just followed the red module installation youtube video to install the UV modules. Also press the module onto the heatsink FIRMLY. Note that I don't have the red module and I am not sure whether this makes a difference.
As my fixture has 12 pads, if I remember correctly in my past many updates there was not one single time that I didn't have to restart one or two modules even the wireless signal is under -50dBm. But this Restart button is a life saver when compared with about 20+ months ago I was really panic when there was error during update and I had to physically press the button on the module!

Same here...just did a full update with V1968 and U/V pads good to go.
A firther U/V question...
I have 4 foot Illumina and I installed 3 U/V pads...I am very happy with the result and got a mind to add more U/V pads in the available spaces (4)
What number of U/V pads are you all using ? What do you think about 7 pads in a 4 foot unit ??
notclear
09/27/2012, 05:10 AM
Vertex recommends one UV module for every two feet of the fixture. I ignored their recommendation and installed 4. I am also tempting to add one more but then I am not sure how to acclimate this one additional pad as all the others are now at 60%. These UV modules are quite strong. Although I started from 10% and have increased it by 5% every 5-7 days, I still lost one zoa and one blasto. They were placed mid tank on the front, not in the middle.
4UV, 3 Red - Illumina 1200
UVs @ 58% now, I've been away for a while but my daughter raises it up by 1% per day!
What are your thoughts on the UV effect? Of couse you get the actinic covered but long term effects; has anyone noticed a color shift yet on any corals?
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Do you find that 3 Red is too much? I am thinking of adding either 2 or 3 Red to my 6' fixture. Do you think 2 can give evenly look?
I have looked at some videos with just the Red on, very dominating.

Correct, the red is super dominant, I think the only reason for 4 Red LEDs on one AUX pad is to have the intense sunset effect other than that I doubt anyone going over 30% or so and even that is too much. even one per pad would be OK!
The only reason I went for 3 Reds was that I wanted the effect be even spread. There is no spotting or dominance in any area, looking at the sand bed you cannot locate the Red or UV pads.

Just got my used SR1800. WOW! Still trying to figure it all out so I won't bore you too many newbie questions. My 2yr old Solaris died and I was able to find a guy that was tearing his reef down for health reasons. No comparison in the quality of light between the old and new system. Illumina at 50% puts out more light than Solaris at 100%
Can't wait to see how my corals react.

Is it still necessary to do a factory reset with this 1968 firmware update? Jamie recommended doing a factory reset in the second step of his "Recommended Procedures" posted in his first posting on UltimateReef. I am wondering if this step is still necessary.

Hi all,
I seem to have got the day lights all like I want. But the moon light has been a challenge. For anyone who uses the Lunar option....do you get a pretty bright wihite light that shoots on around 9 pm (I guess simulating the moon)? This seems way way way too bright for the moon. How do you control the intensity of the lunar moon or is it automatic?
Thanks! Dave

You should be able to compose the color by changing the intensity. I set mine to only 4%.

Admittedly, I have limited experience here as I have just finally got my light working properly, night and day, and I am using the lunar cycle.
Are you using V-link and the desktop software?
When you download your graphs from the fixture are they the same as what you uploaded?
Does the white light you describe appear in your graph from the light or is it happening at random?
Like you, I was having unexpected things happen with my light program.
My light was not doing what I had programed it to do. The sun would not set, The moon would not rise, or whites would come on in the middle of the night. It took me a few days to discover that my graphs from the fixture were not the same as what I had uploaded. Some how in the translation they were being altered when I uploaded them. The graphs were similar but there were always some differences. Thus, my light was doing unexpected things.
Solution: I found that if I immediately downloaded my graphs from the fixture after I had uploaded and saved them, I could see if the graph in the light was the same as what I uploaded.
Once I did this, I had to upload a couple of times to get a exact match in the light and I saved that graph. Now my light is functioning perfectly.
I could be wrong but I believe the problem lies in the v-link dongle method to program the light. If you don't have v-link located in a sweet spot to transmit , it sometimes does not work right or not at all. In my basement the signal strength changes all the time with late at night being the worse time to try and communicate with the light. No idea why. I was told by Guenther , one of the Vertex engineers, to try for a signal around -70db. If you get it too close it overpowers the fixture.
Hope that helps you.

Hey Todd.
Thanks for the reply. I am using the VLink. I love it and got my Day (Sunrise to Sunset) set and it's awesome. I have had some days at 9 pm hit and a white light blasts on and stays on all night. There is nothing on the graphs that depicts this event. I will re upload everything and see if that works. I will also download it back to see what comes back. Thanks for your suggestions. It's a great software tool just not perfected yet - but I know Jamie and his group are working on it. Apparently version 1974 is ready but there is a bug they are fixing before the release.
Thanks! Dave

Hi Randy
My first impression looking at your program is that you are spending a great deal of time getting to max light and relatively little time at the level. My thought is success with that program will depend on what you have in your tank. In my tank my corals thrive on more light at strong levels for longer periods of time. What livestock do you have in your tank and what light levels do they generally like?
Perhaps others will give their impressions.
Good luck with the experiment.

Soft corals are pretty forgiving. So you can do pretty much whatever you like the look of. From my experience most softies will tolerate a wide range of light levels. You should be fine. I have grown them under compact flourescents, metal halides, Solaris, and now Vertex. They seem to do well with all.

I have used these for 3 months and have a mix of SPS and LPS and I would off that you might want to dial down your whites to no more than 25-40%. After all the trial and error I had I set at no more that 75 on other colors (50 on UV) and 25 on whites. It was to intense. And, I have a 150 deep with two SR260s. Just my reality. Everyone's experiences may be different. Good Luck Dave.

I am not an expert, but from what I have read your corals see more of the blue and Royal Blue light than to the white light. The whites are more for your taste not your corals. You have your RB light set lower than white. Why did you do that? I would bump that RB up and see how your corals respond.
I have had my fixture running for 4 or 5 weeks now. I have seen a significant change in the coloration of my corals for the better. The brown is leaving and the pigments are getting brighter. My blue and RB are bright and I have toned down my white to about 55%. I am planning to lower that even further. It is not needed. I am also planning to add three UV modules to my 6 ft fixture.

I agree - I would shoot for 75% on Blue and RB (tweek as you like) and keep whites in 25-50 (min max). I would not go over 60% on UVs (just my opinion). I have one pad for each of my SR260s. Hope this helps.

I just received my SR260 1ft fixture for my 25 gallon cube. (18x18x18) I'm replacing a Kessil A150 10,000K pendant. What would you recommend for a starting point on the mix of White/Blue/Royal Blue? What's the most realistic way to have the colors fade in and out to simulate natural sun?
I've played around with the programming in Expert mode with the fixture sitting on my desk to be comfortable with setting up as many points as necessary. I know a lot of it is personal preference. Thanks!

Expert mode is way to go (in my opinion). I would ramp up to simulate dawn/dusk and max out as follows:
W: 25-40
B: 50-75
R: 50-75
Start out slow and ramp these numbers up over a month. Move in 5 point increments. For example start out as:
w: 10
B: 30
R: 30
move up 5 points per week for 4 weeks. Obviously you can start where you want to end where you want after 4 weeks.
Great lights but they are intense. Mix in lightning and cloud cover to give a cool twist. Also don't forget the moon (lunar is the best). Hope this helps and remember to each his own. This is just my opinion. Good luck.
Thx. Dave

What do you guys think looks most realistic? Like starting with blues in the morning and ending with blues only in the evening. Have the whites peak mid-day and then drop off more quickly than the blues through the afternoon?
I'm using Lunar West Triangle and have some clouds thrown into my program. The lightning effects look awesome. Only problem is that my dog found the lightning a little too realistic and went running to her hiding place in the bathroom! She's deathly afraid of thunderstorms. So I guess I won't be using the lightning effects.

I just received two Multicolor Modules for my SR260.
I installed the modules while watching the BRS Install video. The only deviation from the video was that I hooked up the cables to the existing pad prior to installing the module as it was a pain trying to get the wire clip to fit.
I upgraded the firmware to the 2.035 bin file.
And I got nothing.
If the modules are installed correctly, do they show up as a box in the update window?
I show that I can update Range 0-5.
Is there a way to tell if the installation is correct?
Do I have to power off the fixture after the update to have it take effect?
When I open up the Light Studio in the software program, it doesn't show any of the color channels for the new modules.
If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.
If you need more information from me, just ask.
Thanks.

The Illumina's manual said to only update software to either fix a problem or to run new hardware. If your existing software is working seamlessly with the multicolor modules and the light fixture, there really is no reason to update it I suppose. I've been running the multicolor modules for almost 2 months now without any problems whatsoever using Desktop software 1968, V-Link 1967, and firmware 2035.

Hello Mike.
Your programming looks good. If this is new an you've got coral in your tank I would suggest lowering your white profile. 50% on he whites is usually a max. I guess I'm assuming you e got the standarded 24" deep tank.
Remember it's more easy to kill your coral with to much power. Start slow and try to max out at 50% over a period of time, slow and watch your coral.

OK, I know you must have done that already but let me tell you what I do every time after I change the program settings:
1. Copy the program to the light.
2. Save the program somewhere on my computer.
3. Click on the Start-Up button.
4. Exit the V-link application.
5. Turn off the power of the light fixture, wait for 2 minutes, then turn it back on.
6. Open the V-link application and click on the Day Program on the app, make sure that the graph it fetches from the light is exactly the same that you have previously programmed.
7. Exit the V-link app, no need to save anything even if it prompts you to.
Good luck.

This may be dumb - but is the time set properly on the light?
notclear

That is actually a very good question!
I always check the date, time, and days to full moon settings whenever I change the program settings. Date is always accurate, but the time and days to full moon settings are almost always off, esp. the days to full moon.

something is def. wrong. I even Installed a multicolour module and its not showing up. If I go to expert light studio all I see is royal, blue, and white. really weird. Must be a bad fixture! Its holding the program, but not working properly. Everynight tank is blue and moon settings are off. and now new multicolour module wont show up.

I believe you have done so, but I think there is no harm to ask: have you installed the latest software and firmware that can be downloaded from Vertex's web site?

Also make sure you do a "complete" update of all your led pads. Light will do crazy things if all the pads are not updated.

You must make sure that your VertexLink Desktop software is at version 2007. to check, open the Desktop software, from the menu bar, click on "?", then select About. If it is not Version 2007, update it.
Also the firmware update video is on that link and I don't know why can't you see it. Check this direct link for the video:

Have you gone into your menu and used the action "light studio"? If not, try that and see if your menu program is communicating with your light.

Do you have the red, green, or warm white modules? I believe they only come with blue, royal blue, and white. At least my SR260 did.

I tried both LightComposer and VertexDesktop.

I bought the used one 3ft and the owner said he installed these modules additionally.
Do you see these colors in your menu?

That light composer lets you adjust colors from 0-100 and the fixture immediately responds to the adjustments. No response? That would mean to me no communication. Installed modules correctly? Did you do your updates? Did you do "complete updates" on all pads in fixture?

Yes, all 6 modules has been updated using the Complete Update. And I can Turn On and Off the 6 pads using the Desktop. It should mean that the communication is not an issue, right?
Well, looking at LED I modules I can see that all slots are filled. There are 6 large and 5 small installed. According to the specs SR900 has 6 LED Modules and 5 Auxiliary slots. By default I-260 has White, Royal Blue and Blue. But I also see UV in the menu and can change it.
There is also has Spare Modules menu but nothing happens when I select it.
How can I identify which modules are installed?

When you updated your pads and have the latest updates on your desktop it should automatically show which module pads you have by adding those colors as options to adjust. For instance, the fixture comes standard with blue, royal blue, and white. When you go into the desktop program it will only show those three. When you add modules and do updates, the other colors show up on the desktop program.
I am still stuck on the communication thing. You can turn your main pads on and off from the desktop in the light studio. But you can't do that with the color modules???
If you can't get instant communication with those added modules and you have done the updates there maybe a hardware issue.
I just disconnected from power and reconnected and these colors are disappeared from the menu at all.

Make sure ALL updates are current.
If the modules have never shown up in the desktop software, you may have to reseat the modules.
I had to do this when I added a Royal Blue Module that didn't light up and now it works fine.

I spoke with Jen just a couple of weeks ago about a software issue and she was great!
Fixed my issue within minutes and was very informative about the fixtures and software.
