Seems like every time I see one of these in action,in person or in pictures, it's pulling out gobs of thick dark skim mate. And thick frothy bubbles galore. It must be doing something right, right? Gotta love 'em. Let's hear it owners.:celeb1::celeb1::celeb1:

You're correct they do pull out the gunk but at a price. I just retired my G3 after 3+ yr of use and purchased a I-Tech 200 w/internal pump. Still dialing it in but the gunk production looking good, but the reduction in noise noise level is most enjoyable.

I-tech? where can you buy those?

What makes the noise? the pump? did you put a pad under it?

My G2 used to make a lot of noise from the lack of a silencer on the air intake. The pump was sorta noisy but not too bad. It was also a little noisy where the water cascaded down the exit pipe.

I have a G-3 and a G-2. Both receive overflow directly to their inlets via small acrylic chambers built to seal in the venturi. The G-2 also serves a the inlet from my ozone generator. The generator is pressurized by an air pump, so the G-2 venturi is under positive pressure instead of negative pressure. This unit makes no noise, but doesn't produce much skimmate either. I'm not sure if is due to the ozone, but I believe that it is.

The G-3 produces about 3/4 cup of skimmate daily, but the venturi inlet is the loudest piece of hardware on my tank. Just last knight I contemplated ways to address the issue. I'm considering putting an air pump on the venturi inlet. Provided that you can match airflow with the flow created by vacuum, it should perform the same.

LouH, I didn't know they were ozone capable, that's great. aren't there silencers available for the Venturi?

not a member. there are threads for many skimmers.i just wanted a general, light conversation on these skimmers, not 2,000 posts on modding them. :)

I wasn't aware of a silencer. Do you have a link?

Fish and Other Itchy Stuff, but I'm not sure if they are still making them anymore.

No,thought I saw a diy one on asm thread somewhere.
I saw some silencers on the swc skimmer site, saltwaterconnection.com. I'm sore one of them would fit. i might take a chance or search other vendors for silencer replacements for other skimmers.

Silencers are easy to build. Take any air-tight plastic container. Drill one hole in the cover to accept a small length of rigid tubing that will fit into the pump's air inlet hose and connect the two. Glue the rigid tubing in place where it pierces the container cover. Drill another hole in the container's surface and glue another piece of tubing in place. Fill the container with a loosely balled up paper towel. You've basically replicated a car's muffler. Rigid tubing is available at any LFS in 3 foot lengths for a few bucks and always worth having around.

The Sedra on one of my G3's just died. I replaced it with a Sicce pump. I knew these guys were loud so I was ready when the pump arrived. I used an empty Phosban container, was done in about 15 minutes and spent zero. Larger prescription drug bottles work great too.

Great skimmers. Set it and forget it. Never needs adjusting.

An old picture...but you get the idea. Recirculating G3 on a heavily stocked 125. I meshed the feed pump, ran ozone and this was almost daily production. I just retired this skimmer for a while, I do not have enough bio-load now to keep a stable foam head. It has been one of the best purchases I have made in this hobby, bought it new in 2005, I think, and has been in use off and on since.

These are certainly the best economy skimmer you can get. I think I bought my G3 on this site for used for under $80 shipped. Another $20 in mods and it was a rocking skimmer that could be fine tuned (gate valve) to extreme precision. My skimmate looked much like Sirreal63's daily, though I was feeding quite a bit (and had some hungry eels). Had to tear the tank down and ended up selling the skimmer, but I sure did love it.

i couldnt be happier with my g-3 ! it performs at an exceptional level day in + out. mind came with a 90 degree elbow where the pump connects which i removed and noticed an improvement in production , probably due to the intake being closer to the water surface. anyway . great buy !

Just got my ASM G3 skimmer last week for $125. Waiting till next weekend to build my new sump for it so i can try it out on my 75gallon. I currently am running a Bak Pak 2 skimmer. Lol. Im sure ill see a huge difference in my SPS after i put the G3 in.

thats way overkill for a 75 , love it !!! i get crap for running the g3 on 120 :hmm1: the bakpak does its job fairly good , but you wont believe the difference ! i find mine skims wet for two days after being cleaned , then begins to pull more snotty stuff so i clean mine less . handy because the diarrhea it pulls could gag a maggot at ten feet .

I've had my G2 for over 6+ years and it's still working fine. It's not pulling as dark a skimmate as I recall in the beginning. But, I've been told that there probably just isn't as much organic waste in the tank. My bioload is less than before and the rocks are the same as I started with. I've only had to replace the Sedra 3500 once and the impeller twice, so no complains from me. Also, like others have said, a true set it and forget it skimmer.

Yea.. Im just worried that my water will be so clean i wont be able to keep much LPS. I plan on upgrading to a larger tank sometime so i figure kill 2 birds with 1 skimmer. Lol

Heck of a skimmer for the price.
Mine has the recirc. and gate mods and is fed directly from the overflow.
3 years running now, 24/7, knock on wood.

Does anyone know the diameter of the tubing used for the venturi on the sedra 5000 pump (ASM G3)? I was thinking of venting the tube outside my house in order to raise PH. Trying to decide a way to do this as my tank is right near my basement window...

Great skimmer. I have had a G4 for five years and have been running ozone on it the whole time. I lost and impeller back at the start, but think the new ones are working better. The origion impeller swelled and then wouldn't turn.

I also have a $600 ASM cone and I think they both run about the same.

I have a g3 and no complaints here. You hear people talk abou how they are old and outdated and there is so much better for the money, but IMO they are a workhorse skimmer that does a great job and if you buy used don't cost hardly anything compared to other skimmers.
