I am about to order a new tank and have been looking at going with a 30 inch wide tank instead of a 24 inch wide tank. I got a quote from a few tank builders and am curious about acrylic thickness. Is 1/2 thick acrylic strong enougth that I will not have any problems or is going with 3/4 inch thichness a must.

I would think if you can go 3/4 go that route to be certain. Sweet dimensions, that would be my dream tank

My dad has the same dimensions and he went with 3/4". The tank is about 3 years old and there are no signs of bowing. I think you can get away with 1/2" but it'll bow like crazy after a short while.

Looks like I may have to opt for the 72x24x24 then, the price for the 72x30x24 was almost double if i go with 3/4 inch acrylic. 1/2 inch should be fine for the 72x24x24 correct? It seem to be pretty standard.

well what does the builder recommend?

1/2" seems way thin for an acrylic big tank. usually its 3/4 or 1"

Tene%*r uses 3/8 on their 72 x 24 x 24. I just ordered one and had them build this out or 1/2".

Well i pulled the trigger, Just ordered my tank 72x30x24 made from 3/4 inch thick acrylic and with external overflows. The builder gave me a good deal since I ordered an oak stand and canopy as well.
