Only down side is that they sure can suck some calcium. Between the 10" Derasa and 18" Gigas I was going through 5 cups of calcium chloride and baking soda a week. So the Derasa had to go. I am regreting it now... Time to buy another baby again:)

Yup me to,
I have kept other Derasas and this type seems to grow the fastest, with the mantle spilling over. As if it is trying to get away from its own shell. Just beautiful....

Why take the clam out for a scrubbing? (hmm now asking, the answer seems very plain...to clean it!)
Perhaps I will instead ask, is this common practice and if so, how often? Is it soley for aesthetics? What are the consequences of not scrubbing your clams?
thanks

I had not cleaned my large derasa for several years, but I am recovering from a massive bubble algae outbreak. So I have been taking it out about every 2-3 weeks and giving it a very thorough scrub to eliminate as many green pearls as possible

Gotcha, was double checking to make sure I wasn't missing important care! So far no major nuisance algae issues for me. Although I have probably cursed myself now.
Good luck,

just remember to burp any clam after exposing it to the air
moliken
03/29/2011, 08:11 PM
under the water, you turn it in all directions and frequently air bubbles come out that can hurt/kill the clam if they can't expel the air.

Was living on the sand but had a lot of hair algae developing on the bottom... also, killed my old lights (VHOs) and purchased LEDs without thinking of this guy. Hopefully he's okay with the change. He's about 15" from the lights.
