I'm interested in LEDs and want to know how far above they need to be off the water? As of right now I'm just curious about them and am starting to research them but like what i'm hearing about them.

Mine are about 2-3" off the water (behind an acrylic shield). They can be mounted anywhere, you would just need optics and tighter optics the higher you go.

Ok, so I would be able to fit them under my canopy with like a 60 or 80 degree lens? I have about 6 inches under there

How deep is the tank?

Its a 75 gallon. 15 inches from top of water to the top of substrate, really its 18 but I have a 3 inch sand bed. And its 6.5 inches from top of water to my canopy

3-4" above water is just fine.

I have mine 16" above the water surface :) but all of them have 40 degree optics.. so.. My tank is 24" tall..

My 3 AI modules are 8 inches off the water. 10 was too high and the legs I think are 6 and that sits them right on the water and they are NOT water proof. I refuse any type of cover. I love looking at the top of the water. There are several factors including types of coral, tank depth, par you require at the bottom, optics, spread etc.......just saying

my AI is 12-13 off the water with 70/40 optics. love them.
