I'm setting up an overflow box which is going down to my sump. The sump is drilled on one side and I have a couple questions. Do I need the pipe that runs from the overflow to the sump to be straight down or can I add a couple elbows and have it go around the stand that my aquarium is on?

Elbows are completely fine.

No problem on the elbows, Use the pressure fittings which will have a deeper glue joint and use primer and glue, you don't need the purple primer for your aquarium.
You can even use some spaflex pipe as well.

OK thanks guys, that will make building a stand much easier.
