what are you keeping in the tank? (SPS, LPS, Leathers, FOWLR...)

What is your overflow rated for? How big is your sump?

I have a 125 gallon with a 30 gallon sump and I have a 1200gph overflow with a return pump rated at 1057gph, but with headloss I'm probably getting around 850 gph. I will probably be getting a mag 12 in the near future tho which does 1200 gph. Can't have too much flow imo. Just make sure your pump somewhat matches what your overflows can do.

I have a 125 gallon fowlr with a 100 gallon basement sump. I am running a gen-x pcx-40 return pump which is about 1200 gph and with head loss about 750 gph which works out great because that is what my skimmer pump is rated for. I am running a tunze 6045 for flow in the tank and I will be adding a votech soon.

If you plan to keep your skimmer and other filtration in a sump, running a bit slower through the sump is actually better giving the water more contact time with the filter. I'd shoot for about 800gph or so. I'd make up for this flow difference with powerheads in the display tank - a total flow of around 10-20x your total volume works for most species of coral - a bit faster if SPS dominant, but even thats debatable. Good luck.
