just wanted to investigate what would be the best "bang for you buck" and allow for expandablility later?

1 MP60

X2 MP40

placement?

I'm currently running 3 koralia evo's off my apex. but wanted to look into a vortech down the road.

If its the mixed reef in your sig, Id say 2 X 40's. If you are more heavily on the SPS side, a 60, and add a 40 down the road if you need more.
But of course every tank is different. If you have 300lbs of live rock, maybe 2 X 60's.

yeah, I'm going away from softies and less LPS...I really only have some frilly mushrooms and a Nepthea, a few torches, but moving toward more SPS now.

thanks!

2x MP40's is better. Having flow come from multiple points is superior to one large pump.

thank Tim, so if I went with two MP40's, would I get that "wave" effect in a 180 (6 ft) tank? I think I'd need to turn down my main pump, as the water level is too high right now (it's just at the top of the "teeth" of the overflows).

You may get the wave, but you may not. On a 180 it will depend how much rock you have and your other flow.
