Hi all,

Just picked up a hang on back fuge from a person at work who bought it then never used it. They were nice enough to give it to me free, pump and all! It has a skimmer built in it also but think buying a new one later would be better.

Few questions. What all should I put in it? I checked and it holds about 3.5 gal of water. I have some spare aragonite sand and can get cheato (sp) and LR rubble from LFS. Is that all I need? Was thinking about some carbon in the return?

Also if anyone else has a HOB does the extra weight stress the tanks back wall. Just a little worried about that and may make a brace to support the weight.

I have a 29 gal with just live rock in it now as the cycle just finished. Got a small CUC coming from reefkeepers. Still going to wait on the fish as I want to make their new home as comfy as possible.

Thanks,
willy0508

Interesting question, I had the same thoughts when I was thinking about one for my
55g. The brace would be simple enough to do and give you some piece of mind.

Yea, unfortunately no room under for a sump/fuge so HOB it is. Just worried about the weight. If I figure right it will be about 8lbs/1gal or 16 lbs for H20 (or a little more) about 1-2 lbs of sand and the LR rubble being about 1-2lbs. Total about 20lbs or more. Just don't want to come home to a leaking tank one day. :)

Anything else that should go in the HOB fuge?

Macro algae!

I just put LR rubble on the bottom and chaeto on top. You'll also need a light.

Chaeto is what's really important. It will use up the Phosphates in your water, thus preventing nuisance algae from growing.

thanks all. Maybe I'll go with just rock and chaeto to help with the weight. Still going to do a brace or stand to sit it on as I'm still worried about the weight.
