There is a member of my Local reef club that is trying on these HID's on his tank has anyone heard any details on these. Just Interested is all.

Do a search, there has been some talk about using them on display tanks.

If I remember correctly, in order to get the proper par, you need to use projectors, but when you do so, you narrow the beam and get less coverage, and therefore require more lamps. So it ends up not being worthwhile

Ok yeah I am running leds on my setup right now but I was just kinda shocked I figured they would get super hot

Metal Halides are HID(High Intensity Discharge) lamps. Some companies are using the bi pin bulbs like the ones use in cars. The ones for tanks are obviosly made with specific color temps 10K, 14K, 20K, etc. The ones for cars are normally 6-8K and are not optimal for reefs or asthetics.
