For a 75 gallon tank with head loss of about ~4ft would a mag 9.5 cause too much flow through the sump? (at 4ft mag 9.5 puts out 800gph)

Or would a mag 7 be better? (at 4ft it puts out 480gph).

I'd go with the 7. quieter , less watts. but check into the Eheim and Tunze Silence pumps. they're even better than the mag for those reasons.:)

I'm setting up my 75g with a Mag 9.5, but only because I'll also be using it to feed two reactors, my refugium, and a possible future frag tank.

I didn't know eheim were quieter. I thought they were all at the same level.

I guess it would be safer to over shoot it a bit and then control it with a ball valve for any future reactors, etc.

I had to turn ball valve on my 150 due to too much flow, I'd say a 7 would be plenty

I use a 9.5 for my 60 gallon tank, but I have a ball valve on it to regulate flow. It's running close to full bore. Imagine a clock with full flow at 12:00. My ball valve is set about 1:00. This set-up was recommended to me by Jeff at LifeReef when I ordered my overflow. I like having the option to adjust flow up or down. I don't have any complaints about noise from this pump and it's been a reliable workhorse for me.
