Hello:

I am looking for a 4" (3-5" if that works) fan that is ultra quiet. I know I am not going to find one that is dead silent, but do need one to run as quiet as possible.

Now that all my equipment is in my new basement/maintenance room; things like my MP60 and Tunze powerheads and my canopy mounted fans are now loud.:lolspin:

So if anyone has any suggestions and/or first hand experiences with nice quiet fans I would great appreciate any guidance.

Many thanks and I look forward to your replies...........

I got a simple power supply for ac/dc converter and ran computer fans. They are nearly dead silent and still move a lot of air. The only thing is they are not temp controlled always on or off until I get a apex or something. If you have a microcenter or something close you can have a 2 fan setup for less than 30 bucks with a power supply. Good luck man.

I installed this cheap 12v pc fan above the trickle plate of my Percula 100. It is controled by a Profilux but works very well and is silent. Not sure how long it will last in this environment though.

At 53 CFM and 28 dB, definitely not efficient enough and want to stay below 20 dB if possible.

What is the CFM and dB of these fans?

I am actually replacing these fans...had them running for over 5-years and great fans. But now that I do not have any more equipment under canopy, etc...they are too loud imho. Good reliable fans though.

Do you have a link to these fans?

I use 3 of them on my 240 gallon tank with 3x250 watt mh and 4 x 160 watt VHO and they can't be heard at all.
If you are looking at less the 20dBA's then you will not get alot of air movement.
Oh by the way these Vantecs are 5 years old and still working.

I did some extensive online research once and came up with these. Never purchased them though (or any other fans):

Just doing a seach here on RC will bring up a ton of fans people are happy with.

I have been using SilenX fans for years. I don't have a link but, Google is your friend. They are amazingly quiet and they have some pretty high airflow level models. I also want low voltage DC fans over my tank vs units that plug into the wall.

ixtrema pro series quiet fans.
Featuring the first fan blade designed for optimal airflow and aerodynamics, SilenX iXtrema Pro Series Quiet Fans are the result of thousands of hours of testing and fluid dynamics simulations. The result is a fan that can push more air per revolution at lower noise levels than any other fan available and proof that SilenX delivers the best in silent computing. Reduced motor size, increase fan blade surface, lower lateral surface area on the motor vanes along with silicon-composite fan mounts puts this fan above the rest.

I had good luck with 120mm SCYTHE SLIP STREAM SY1225SL12M in my canopy. Very quiet and move a decent amount of air. They were like $8 ea.
