Tank is cycling on day 10 now and i have this green algae growing everywhere on my sand bed on my rocks and on the glass i have 60lbs of BRS reef savor and 10lbs of fiji live rock. The algae started on the live rock which makes me believe i got it from the rock. here are some pics

Hey,
All of that algae is normal cycling algae. looks like you have some dry rock and some live rock in there. Your tank will cycle through different algae blooms. You need to get some crabs and snails, and they will eat every bit of it.

Can i put snails and crabs in there now with the tank cycling? And should i have the lights on?

I would do a test of the water quality. If you have zero nitrites and zero ammonia, and your pH is normal(which it should be after 10 days), then its fine. I usually put inverts into the tank the next day to control the algae. if you used liverock, and livesand, your tank is cycled enough. but to answer the question, the green algae is byropsis, and the slimy red stuff that has bubbles looks like cyano. both would be cured with the crabs/snails and are normal cycling of a new tank. By the way, where in Wi do you live? I am in Oshkosh.

Oh, and no need to have the lights on with nothing in there. It will only cost more in electricity and cause more algae to grow.
As for snails and crabs, let me know if you need advice as to where to buy them from.

I did a water test yesterday and ammonia was about .50 nitrate nitrite was 0. I used a shrimp to cycle with 10 lbs of live rock rest is 60 lbs of BRS reef saver. Sand was play sand from Home Depot. I was going to let the tank go at least a month before I put anything it as im in no rush. I live in Wisc Dells.

In that case, it might take a while longer to cycle the tank. I always used at least 50% live rock. Either way, get a few snails from petco, turbos, or astreas and they will clean things up for you. Also, no need to light too much since the tank has nothing in it.
By the way, is the shrimp still alive? Those are usually sensitive to changes in the tank.

No lol it's a dead shrimp from grocery store I used to cycle the tank get ammonia. Wasn't ever alive.

Never heard of that way of cycling. That might cause your tank to be out of balance. I would take it out of there, and let the water cycle on its own. Like I said, my tanks are always ready to go in a day using the LR. Since you have less LR, I would have let it cycle for 4-5 days. But I would not advise putting any dead stuff in there, it causes more problems. Where did you hear about doing that?

Mrsaltwater tank tv talked about it and i heard a little bit about it on here. It just puts ammonia into the system. Since i dont have enough live rock to cycle the tank and dont have any fish or inverts in there i used a shrimp. The decaying shrimp causes ammonia to go up starting the cycle. I have had some success with it so far. I removed the shrimp yesterday cause i was smelling pretty bad. The tank has been going for about 3 weeks now and i am going to be adding a cuc and maybe a clown.
