Just trying to get some opinions on what you guys would put in an 8g cube?

8 is too small for a clownfish. Maybe 1 firefish but the best thing for an 8 would be a very small goby/shrimp pair.

Agree with the other guys a Yasha goby paired with a pistol shrimp would be cool. Just make sure your sandbed is deep enough, so they could build their cave.

See I like the firefish, but my tank doesn't have a lid and they are known jumpers aren't they?

Nah, use the clear birdnetting type stuff they have at BRS. You could also custom cut something out of acrylic of glass.
