Which pump would be best for a 64Lx32Wx22H?

I currently have 6 mp40, thinking on going with 2x mp60. Do think it'll be too strong? Need advice?

Thanks
Ed

Because the tank is so wide, the MP60's could be a great match. If you'd prefer to have fewer pumps, two MP60's would be great.

MP60s are LOUD. Sounds like a power drill when they are turned all the way up. I would stick with the MP40s and link them all. Would make for a great wave pattern.

If you have a loud MP60 then there is something wrong. They should sound no louder than an MP40 at full speed.

Tim,

I have two MP40 on each side and another two on the rear of the tank. all are linked.

I'm debating if changing the two on each side with one MP60. would the MP60 be strong? would it blow my sand all over the place?

That's what I'd start with. Replace the side MP40's with one MP60 on each side. I don't think it would be too strong in a tank that size.

would one MP60 flow be wide enough? at least equivalent to having two mp40?

Yes, absolutely.

wow thats amazing. if that could replace two MP40 on one side of the tank and still be as wide..

ok.. i try two of them out.. but will keep my 40s just in case.. thanks

I have two MP60’s and I absolutely love them. They replaced 5 MP40’s and they are pretty much equal in the terms of noise. I personally feel that they better designed than the smaller MP40. Since your tank is large enough to handle the MP60 I would not think twice about the upgrade.

I am getting ready to start putting my 210 together should I go with two MP40's or one MP60 ?

My two-cents......

Being a Tunze guy for years I made the switch to (1) MP60 on the left side of my 180-gl SPS tank (see sig for dimension and setup) and had two existing Tunze's on the right side. Well just the other day I finally saved up enough money (yea all these powerheads are not cost friendly) and bought my second MP60 and took the Tunze's out.

I am VERY happy with the broad flow of the MP60's (never owned MP40's...so I have no experience when compared) and the overall flexibility with controls of speed, etc blows Tunze's out of the water imho. I really felt that with only one MP60 and Tunze's I was not getting the full affect of running the Vortech technology to the fullest. Now I feel I am there.

To answer those questions as they relate to (4) MP40's or (2) MP60's.....I would have to say that (2) MP60's would be a better fit for broader flow, less footprint inside/outside of the tank and overall less noise. Now I will say that the MP60's are not quiet pumps. They do make noise when ramping up and down. I choose to go with two MP60's at 60-70% speed instead of two/four MP40's at 100% to keep the noise down as well as future proof my SPS tank down the line. I think the noise is greater in my application because all my equipment is now in the basement and very little equipment is in the display room. Heck, even my canopy fans and Durso standpipes stand out now:-).

Anyway.....a big fan of the MP60's and you will not be disappointed. Two thumbs up to EcoTech. And their customer service has been great too.....

IMHO.......

to get a better idea.. here are some current shots of the tank. My concern is flow coverage and sand moving.

First Doc....that is a SWEET setup/build.

Boy....that's a tough questions. Looks like you have those six MP40's positioned nicely. Tough call and will have to defer to the EcoTech Pros on this one. At the very least, if you do go MP60's, I would keep the two MP40's on the back wall and get two MP60's for the side panels IMO.

Quick edit...just remembered that your tank is only 22" tall, so MP60's may be a sand storm if turned up???

Good luck......

Tegee, thanks.. i know its a tough decision.. and you are correct. the tank is only 22" tall, my concern in sand blast.

hope someone with similar configuration chime in with an input.

Sandblast is a concern. From experience, you need at least 6" clearance from top rim of tank to top of MP60 in order not to suck air/vortech. MP60 is 4" tall, so you only have 12" left and that does not include depth of sandbed.

BTW: my tank is 29" in height (see sig...).

HTH.....

good point.

You will definitely have to turn the speed of the pump down, but I don't see that as being a major problem for a tank that size. Ultimately experimentation will be the best option. I still think one MP60 (on each side) could replace the two 40's on each side of the tank.
