I'm taking a web design class and an assignment is to find a web host for our final assignment. What good free ones (that can be expanded later for a fee, and later have database capabilities) can you recommend?

I had good sucess with http://byethost.com/index.php/free-hosting
Not all free hosting companies are equal :) I did a lot of searching to find this one.
Want to know why they are the best? Here is a quote from their page:
Byet provides you with an ad-free load balanced free hosting service including PHP, MySQL, FTP, Vistapanel & more!.
What's this mean? You can run most scripts on your webpage!
Disclosure:
No way affiliated just a happy prior user of the service!
p.s.
Looking for a free domain with no ads? Goto http://dot.tk/
There are some conditions but there is 0 catch and you get your own whatevermywebsiteiscalled.tk domain. nice twist is you can actually use it as a REAL domain and not just a domain forwarding service.

LOL, thanks, I was getting pretty overwhelmed trying to search and looking for reviews. No ads is good :).

if your just looking for file hosting, fileden.com is good (good space and bandwidth for free) if you haven't logged in, in a while they try to hit you with offers, but its no big deal, just skip them. (click skip/no thanks)
most free sites have a time limit for not logging in (usually a moth) just remember to log in:p
I remembered google having a free hosting thing to.... cant remember the name of it ATM...
