What's the strongest and safest silicone to use to build a sump? I just ordered 4 pieces of 1/4 in glass to start my sump and looking for the best silicone for the project. Thanks

The best one IMHO is Momentive RTV 100 series. Clear is 108 and black is 103. It is avail at most local Grainger's. This is used by many OEM aquarium builders as well. Is it needed for a sump build probably not but it is only $9 for a caulking gun sized tube.

I used AllGlass brand aquarium silicone for my recent sump project. My LFS sells it in the small toothpaste tubes and the large caulking gun size. I've seen it at a couple of other LFS here in town as well.

wonder why no one ever mentions marinelands aquarium sealant from fosters and smith.
I have heard a lot of good things about the rtv, but never used it, still use ge, no issues so far.

Which GE do you use?

i use ge number 1 100% sillicone from home depot. recenly i found the black 100% sillicone number 2, which i used on my overflow box. I made sure it did not have the anti mold stuff in it, read the tube 3 times to make sure.

If you use the GE then the words you are looking for in VERY SMALL print on the back are " USDA approved for incidental food contact"

I got a tube of GE No. 1 silicone, got it home and then noticed that it said on the back "not for use below the water line or for aquariums".

The GE silicone I is a sealant not an adheasive. (also most if not all the silicones packaged by aquarium companies are sealants as well, from what I have read).

The monmentive RTV silicone is an adhesive and is far stronger than GE I or other sealants. There are a couple of other alternatives that are similar to the monmentive RTV 100 series, but the RTV is what gets reccomended the most.

Sealants are fine for installing baffles in sumps, and might even hold together small tanks (for a while), but if youre actually building a water holding vessel, use a proper adhesive silicone.

Ok thanks for the good input now if I can find a place that sells the RTV around my area.

if you look hard enough ALL silicone tubes or data sheets will say that...reason being is silicone deteriorates under water, that is also why most tanks are built in two or more stages the final being a complete an uniform inner seal.

however; i too recommend RTV 100 series or SCS1200....

as for the OP, i hope you ordered 5 pieces of glass, it is awfully hard to make a water tight conventional tank with four pieces of glass...unless the four pieces you ordered were strictly for baffles..the original post wasnt clear as to whether you were building the actual vessel or just dividing a manufactured one..

All the rave in South Africa that the guys use in Dan Braven silicone. I used the Bostik Marine series silicone on my 100 gallon and still holding for almost 5 years.

Amazon also sells Momentive RTV 100s.

Thanks...couldn't find this exact stuff on McMaster (which I love) but I did find it on Amazon.com after searching some.

Here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V40OF2)

I'm using it for baffles in a sump but one will be the fuge baffle that will hold more than 15g of water....better safe than sorry.

Thanks everyone.
