View Full Version : Critique my simple sump designs for a large system please

I'm designing a large sump for my multi tank system. I'll have a 300 gallon display tank, 135 gallon fuge/mangrove display tank and small frag tank all tied into one sump. The sump's main purpose is to have a common area for water to drain, get skimmed, heated, de-gased and returned. One problem I have right now with my current sump (similar to version 1) is that the water at the top of the drain or sock section becomes stagnant and collects a film. I'd like to avoid that with this sump. I've drawn two designs. I scanned the drawings a couple days ago and have recently decided not to run filter socks. So please ignore the "sock chamber" label at the bottom. It's now just a drain section. I'll be running reverse durso's in the drain section. Four Ehiem pumps will be running in the return section. I expect no more than 3,000 gph to go through the sump. Tell me if you think version 1 will create a stagnant film situation or if you think there will be enough flow going through to avoid it. Version 2 would take care of stagnant water at the top but could possibly allow micro bubbles to pass over the first baffle.

i personally think u should redesign one where u can have the sock and the skimmer fit into the first chamber have a refugium in the second chamber and have a small section in chamber threee for ur return...for me that is the ideal setup because u get the dirtiest water coming out of chamber one whoich the skimmer gets to touch first then ur fuge gets to help filter out a little more then u finally get to return it back and also put a pice of foam pad between ur baffle to prevent microbubbles

I'm going to have a 135 gallon fuge separate from the sump. And I think with enough baffles I won't need sponges. Sponges and socks trap gunk. I'd rather let the skimmer pick it up. I'll have to vacuum the sump every couple months. To me this is less work than cleaning three socks once a week.
