View Full Version : pH worries... are they worth it

My pH is at around 8.0 (according to API test kits). I've read that it should be around 8.2 to 8.5 for reef and FOWLR tanks. My fish and corals seem fine, even with the current pH. It could be that the readings are inaccurate, but a true pH meter is quite expensive.

With that said, should I even worry too much about the pH readings in my tank?

In general if you pay attention to your alkalinity the pH will look after itself. If you'd like more peace of mind, the Hanna pH pens are very simple to calibrate and use, and not terribly expensive.

As long as your pH remains between 7.8-8.5 there should be no concerns.

HObby grade test kits can be inaccurate. I would get a good two point calibration pH meter.

I agree, the substantial worries arise when the pH drops below 7.8 or above 8.5.

That doesn't mean that certain organisms won't grow a lot faster at pH 8.3 than at 7.8, but it means you can have a fine reef aquarium even as low as pH 7.8 :)
