Friend has a lion now for about 5 weeks and had it eating frozen shrimp from a stick. It has not eaten now for 10 days so he tried live feeders today and the lion didn't touch them. He is concerned the lion is done for. Anyone have this experience and is the fish beyond help? Thanks

Do you have any more information? Tank size? Water conditions? Tank mates?

What kind of shrimp? Krill or?

How big is the lion and what species? Is a pic possible?

When's the last time they did a water change? A good one.

It's a ratiata lion and the only fish in a 108 gallon hagen tank. People keep saying"do you mean 180".lol. No it is 108. Tank has been running for 3 months and the first water change 20% was done last Thursday. Pic is not possible at this time. He has sump with macro algae-doing poorly and his nitrates are 0. Only fish in such a big .tank I would say is the reason. He does not have any live rock-not going to use it. He only has a few pieces of tuffa.SG is at 1.026 with refractometer. Fish was eating only shrimp from grocery store. Has not touched even the feeders or any shrimp for eleven day now. Has tried he/she with silversides as well. By the way no signs of disease at all. good eyes and has been swimming. Thanks

Forgot to mention he has a ton of bio-balls there for filtration.

If there is no place for it to hide, and the lights are even remotely bright, it probably is pretty stressed. It needs some places to hide.

I hear ya. I've been telling him to put more rock in the tank. Just has 2 pieces with halides!!!! He has alot of rock in buckets but he doesn't like it. Told him to put it in that fish needs some comfort. He doesn't think the fish is stressed-eating before and so on.

Lions can go a couple weeks without eating, but in this case I think it is mostly stress related. He best fix the problem to save the fish. He should have never bought a fish like that so prematurely. Maybe take it back to the store, don't just let it die.

It's going to die?

Without the proper conditions, more than likely. Increased stress causes lack of appetite and increase risk for health problems and premature death.

Makes sense to me. Will be talking to him tonight and will let him know what RC has been saying. Thanks

He disagrees and will prove RC wrong. I disagree totally with him. Time will tell I guess. His point is the fish is swimming not hiding in a corner.

It's looking for cover and a way out.

All of the folks that have answered/commented in this thread are VERY experienced lionfish keepers. It has nothing to do with "proving RC wrong", but if your friend chooses to disregard the advice, it's his problem. Too bad the fish will likely suffer for it...

Had a heated discussion last night. He is going to put some rock in the tank today!! Just ticks me off when he knows better. Hope it's going to help and not too late!!!!!

Thought I'd update:

Fish still not eating and swimming more on its side according to the owner. Ticks me off but he is a stubborn sob. He is putting more rock in but to little to late. Told him to fill his tank with rock for future purchases. This kind of thing just ticks you off.

Yeah I gave up on this with him. He still insists the fish wasn't stressed. Can't convince some people.

Sorry for the fish, hopefully he researches some more before taking on any more fish. We have all made mistakes at one time or another in this hobby, but the frustrating thing here is that the fish may have been able to be saved. Hope he realizes and learns from his mistakes.
