Tang tank

I know that I don't have the tank size to get a Naso Tang, however I am looking into getting a much larger tank from a friend. I was wanting to get a Naso down the road, but I want to get a small one so that I can enjoy it from a juvenile to adult. My LFS is telling me that the Naso Tang's that are small don't fair well in a home aquarium. Is this true or is my LFS just trying to get me to spend the money for a show size fish?
