I was out walking my dog today when I noticed a tank sitting out some ones garage. Well to make a long story short I got this 65 gl tank for free! guy said the only thing wrong was it leaked. I have a couple of pics here. Wanted to know if I should break it down and reseal everything or patch work? I'm leaning towards teardown but want some opinions! I really like this tamk! 47x16x20. Plus i want to stripe glass due to the fact I know nothing about this tank or in it. Chemicals? Apperhensive about it. Any thoughts? Thanks

Would be smart just so you know there's no copper leeching from the silicone.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. Should I buy just the simple silicone from lowes or is there a certain kind I need? Anybody ever reseal a tank? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

lowe has fish and reef safe silicone comes in a green tube kinda small I have heard you can use other kinds as well to seal it. search this site in diy and reef discussion and you should come across will try and remember where i saw it at.

I would look for an RTV silicon (its RTV and some number that is escaping me right now). Silicon that is sold in HD or lowes is a great sealant, but as an adhesive, its properties are no where near what they use when constructing a tank.

Will the HD/Lowes version hold, probably. But do you want to chance 65 gallons and all your livestock?

Its Momentive RTV 100. I think 103 is clear and 105 is black or I may have them reversed. That is what most tank builders use

make sure you use 100% silicon adhesive to reseal the tank.

go with the black silicon if u do it i think it makes it look a lil sharper in my opinion. expecial if u have the black trim around your tank!!

So the RTV 100 is sold in HD or lowes? Or do I have to go to a speciallty store? yeah I was going to go black with the reseal and then clear for inside the tank.

I think you have to order it, HD and Lowes don't carry it

easiest place to get it is at a grainger. they're a contactor supply store, but will sell small purchases to you. Call ahead to make sure they have it.
