View Full Version : Return nozzle votex - how do you stop it??

I keep getting a vortex from my return nozzle. Every hour or so, the nozzle creates a vortex and the resulting air that gets drawn in results in a very annoying slurping noise and then a burst of bubbles. I've tried adjusting the nozzle to different angles. The nozzle fitting where it comes over the overflow has a slow leak. Would that be causing any of this? Or do I just need to continue adjusting the nozzle until I find the "sweet spot"?

Try and move the nozzle lower in the display tank (deeper). If the vortex is coming from the nozzle that will be the only fix.
If it is coming from the inlet of the return pump, then you have to either lower the pump further into your sump, or raise the water level in the sump. Otherwise you will have to slow down the return rate.

You can keep trying to find a sweet spot or you can also try changing the nozzle for a different shape and or size. I would suggest one with a larger opening then your current one so that you get the same volumn but a slightly less jet type of output.
