Easy there buddy. You may not be moving the tank on Saturday but you may be "working" on it somehow!

Let's not forget, Nate helped me with the stand. Thanks Bro!

No worries. I'll let you know. Getting it in the house was the first step. Now I'll drink beer, stare at it and think about the next step.

Sweet looking tank, Chuck. Good thing it's up kinda high...Wouldn't want you to drink a few too many brewski's, fall into that beast & drown before everything's finished...;) Thanks for the orange cap frag. Cya at the meeting in a few.

not a problem at all Chuck, thanks for the slimer frag, and dont forget what i asked(more like begged you about) lol ;)
that tank is really sweet, you can do so much with it due to its dimensions.

04/21/2011, 07:38 AM
What are the dimentions of that stand,I have a 120 feed tub that was a sump at one time?

tcwayne
04/21/2011, 07:43 AM
48x48. But a 48 inch tank will not work cuz the floor inside is a little less than 48

The 120 and a frag tank and now the 240. The 120 is coming down. Hey we were going to get together, sorry I got busy. As usual. Anyway, we'll hook up soon.

51 long x 37 wide x 20 tall, just a bit long for what you have.

tcwayne

I'll continue here for the build thread, why not right? Starting out, Nate and I decided to rebuild the stand cuz it was very limited for putting anything underneath. We decided to go 36 inches tall, not realizing that it had to fit through the front door at the time. oh well I took it apart and put it back together.

I had an overflow built for a 156 I was going to put together that was 48 inches. John got it done for me. Then I got this 240 and thought maybe I could use the overflow I already had made. Not. Too long. Do you all know how beneficial it is to know Chris McNeil? Anyways I gave him the 48 inch overflow yesterday and today it is cut and resized to fit this tank between the returns. Thanks Chris! Here's a really crappy pic but you'll see it once it's installed, gotta drill some holes in it.

No problem Chuck, that really was an easy mod.ive had to modify alot of stuff in the past 15 years working with plastics, some of them were truely a PITA,that was a breeze ;)
Remember, when you are ready to plumb it dont hesitate to ask.we can set you up like we did Bruces old 240.it will be super clean with the panels to cover everything up.we have a cheap foam cored pvc sheet that is very lightwieght and easy to cut that works great for cover panels.

Have you considered running two sumps on this tank? Maybe 2 40 breeders or something?

tcwayne
04/22/2011, 11:45 AM
Trying to figure it out. I run two now connected with two inch pipe. I was gonna go a big 50 gal one and call it a day. But I plan on fitting my frag tank under there which is about the size of a 40 breeder. I'm still in the trying to figure it out stage. I want it to be clean and functional. I got a chiller to think about and a huge flippen skimmer.

anbosu
04/22/2011, 12:13 PM
You could build some shelving under there and stack the sumps, especially if your protein skimmer is external. The good news is the way you built the stand and due to the footprint of the tank you have a lot of options.

By the way, I still need to come get that stand from you. I'll try to do that in the next week or so (depending on your schedule obviously).

tcwayne

No clue. This tank has been passed around the community a little. I think Pacificreefs got it made or bought it originally.

At this point I will have two 250's over it with actinic led or t5 or vho?? Trying to figure that out. CMcNeil is building me a fixture to hang over it. 40 inches long. It will accommodate two halides and actinics or it would be cake to mod it for all led. Yet to be determined. Thanks Ted.

Ok so I decided to not use the overflow afterall. The way it was designed it would be better suited for a normal tank. This tank has a support rim that goes around the top therefore rendering the overflow useless. In other words the water level, if the water came to bottom of overflow, would be too low and look as if the tank always needs to be filled. Scratch...... drawing board....

I have a frag tank running that has just two pipes running out the back and it works fine. It's sort of a ghetto Herbie but it's quiet once I dial the ball valves in. Anyways, that's how I'm going to do this tank, sort of... This will be a full siphon but there will be no overflow, just straight pipes which I'll paint black eventually. Here's what I mean and it looks sort of like a beananimal without an overflow.

original overflow that I'm scraping.

Thanks Chris. Doing the returns now. I still have to drill the sump and finish plumbing the pump and manifold. I should have the gate valves I ordered on Monday. I'm setting it up so I can plumb the gate valves after it's already running. So there will be a ball valve before the gate valve manifold.

tcwayne
05/07/2011, 09:35 AM
Here's where I'm at.....
I'm tying to use a gate valve I already had with a tee on it. What I'm trying to figure out is if I'll be able to use flex from the tee that's connected to the ball valve going to the manifold and connecting to the gate I have on the returns. Tell me what you guys think, if the pics make sense.

What did you have to do to keep it quiet with all of that flow? How many gph is going through the sump?

Right now not sure how many gallons I'm pushing. A LOT. It's a Reeflo Blackfin 6000. Throttled back of course. I played with the drains since 5:30 today. I ended up turning one 90 down and the other two up. Put a 1/4 inch piece of hose on the 1st drain that I set to a certain level of the tanks water. As the water gets to the 1/4 inch piece it bounces sort of. In other words it gets a blast of water into the other wise free air flowing tubing. When the water has no air it screams down the pipes. Once the level hits the tubing and lets the smallest bit of water into the tubing thats full of air it flows faster, super fast. That somehow keeps it at that exact level with a slight bit of water going in the tubing and then full air again. It's happening so quickly that there is ZERO noise. Maybe my explanation sucks but it works.

tcwayne
05/10/2011, 08:51 PM
Oh and theres 3 drains for redundancy. The first drain is handling all the flow and the second is a trickle. The third is emergency. If the first fails the other two pickup and it will sound like a freight train but what a way to let you know that there's a problem. Huh?

acro-ed

Clever, I'd like to see a picture of the drains if it's not too much trouble

Thanks but without Southnash I would have never known how to do it. Sure I could have researched for days and gotten to it but this was quick thanks to the research he did. I'm a mooch I guess. Anyways this started as me looking at the bean animal photos and copying what I saw, no reading, blah. Since I didn't know how this was going to work there was a little trial and error, like the black tape over the the second drain. I drilled it then realized I didn't need to.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd44/tcwayne/6ae74117.jpg

Here's the 1/4 inch tube. I set it at the water level I want the tank to be at and it sits there throbbing (with little noise) but with this system I can't hear it tho very faint. So far the pump says I'm the one your gonna hear all the time.

No corals moved. I did a water change on the 120 and used that water in the 240. I'm gonna let the 240 run for a while first. I just got the reflectors from Southnash yesterday. I may get time to put the lighting together today. Right now there is a PC fixture over temporarily. I'll get with Sue today.

how much is yours restricted?

tcwayne
05/11/2011, 08:53 AM
Probably half. 1 1/2" pipe on a straight drain (without pump) is 2100. You can push up to 7400 ish through a pipe that size. I'd say I'm somewhere close to 3000 right now. That may be way off but it's silently cranking.

I still have plumbing to do but I'll likely hang the light today. This is the"box" that CMcNeil made for me. It houses two lumenmax elite reflectors and a strip of four royal blue led's. I will be adding two 36 inch strips of royal blues that I'm getting from RapidLed later.

Thanks! It's made out of black 1/4 inch starboard kinda. Chris will have to chime in. It's lightweight and the same stuff Rob's was made of that he put over the 70 cube.

3 watts for sure, you would not believe the amount of light that 4-3 watt strip puts out. I will never think LED's will be washed out by halides.

Got my Penductors today. I may to do some creative plumbing. I think they may end up too close to the waters surface and vortex something fierce. Ill know later when I get home. If then I'll have to plumb down and put a threaded 90 on there. True?

HaHa!

Well I got the penductors in and holy moly! I had to turn the pump gate valve down. Then they were too close to the surface so I put a couple of 90's on there and I cranked the flow back up. I may not need powerheads at all. It's pretty nice and there's great movement throughout the whole tank. Obviously I'll never be able to put anything near the output.

Thanks Nate!

So far the flow is not an issue as far as how much, just have to fine tune it. That MP60 is perfect for the center back wall. Provides the necessary mixed up flow. If I turn off the main pump and crank the MP60 up on short pulse, I get a freaking nasty wave. It's insane. I just have the epoxy on the ready because it blasts corals right off. I haven't used it cranked up like that but a couple times but I know the power is there when you need it.
Thanks about the manifold, that was fun making and guess what.
Aquatic eco systems sells manifolds already built. I found that out after I built mine!

Valve Manifolds, Large

These PVC globe valves are glued together as manifolds to save time. Each valve will pass 2 gpm with less than 1 psi pressure loss. The valves have 1/2" FNPT outlets. The manifold ports are 1/2" FNPT and a threaded plug is included. Made in USA.

These look nice, and is probably ok for equipment you don't need a whole bunch of flow to. I'm not a big fan of globe valves though, and the volumetric flow rate seems a bit on the weak side. With the large gate valves, I like yours much better. :)
