View Full Version : VSV bacteria bloom, where to go from here?

System has a total water volume of about 65g. I have been dosing VSV at .2ml a day, as well as MB7 at its recommended 5ml a day per 50g.

So today I woke up to a slightly cloudy tank, like someone poured some milk into the tank. The articles I have read about VSV have said this might be due to an overdose of carbon source and a resulting bacterial bloom. I assume this is what happened even though I am only dosing .2ml on a 60g total water system.

What I could not find, is what action to take from here? Still dose VSV today but cut it in half to .1ml? Only dose MB7 at 5ml per 50g like bottle says? Do no dosing of anything and run carbon?

Any thoughts? All livestock look to be doing fine as well and no other things were dosed, or added, or changed.

How long have you been dosing the organics?

Been dosing 9 days now.

I'd reduce the dose of the VSV by half and continue for a few days. :)

Ok thanks much. Today I will dose .1ml VSV and the regular amount of MB7 which for my system I've doing 5ml daily?

I assume if in a couple of days the cloudiness is not gone, that will tell me that it hasn't corrected itself?

Yes, I'd cut the dose again if the cloudiness isn't gone in a few days.

Thanks everyone! So today I will dose .1ml of VSV and 5ml of MB7. I will report back as to how it went.

I doubt if it matters whether you dose any MB7 or not, but I also doubt it will hurt anything. Your tank obviously has plenty of bacteria already. :D

Woke up this morning and the water was much clearer with just a slight amount of cloudiness. Much less than yesterday. No livestock losses at this point, and I will continue to dose .1ml of VSV.

I might reduce the MB7 to 2ml today.

Just an update

That sounds like good progress! I hope the situation keeps improving.
