What is the level on most test strips when Ammonia becomes toxic to fish. Meaning we start seeing changes in respiration, red spots etc.

Oh sorry, my post didn't go all the way through apparently. It was supposed to read any measurable amount by your test will be toxic.

+1. Some fish can survive a short period of time with a little ammonia in the water, but ANY ammonia is toxic.

+1. The fish may not die right away, but ammonia does permanent damage to their gills.

And from what I understand it is painful for them.

+1 just a very small trace of ammo is lethal to fish over time. its burns their gills and kills slowly over time.
