View Full Version : So I guess my rock is still leaching PO4, is GFO even worth it?

I started the tank 6 months ago with dry fiji rock from BRS. Had very high PO4 initially (0.31), but it has come down to 0.04-0.05 (stable) on the hanna checker.

I run HC-GFO, and the day after an exchange the tank is around 0.02 on multiple tests, but three days later it's back to 0.04-0.05. Seems I'm just exhausting the GFO that quick? If I don't run GFO it stays around .04-.05

Is it even worth it to run GFO if the rock (I guess?) is still leaching PO4? I'd have to change the GFO twice a week to keep it around 0.02.

I feed frozen PE Mysis that I defrost in a cup and drain through paper towels so I remove ALL the liquid.

Yes, GFO depletes rapidly when phosphate is elevated. If you want phosphate lower, more GFO is the easiest way.

What is in the tank now? You may not need to drive it especially low. :)

As of now, bunch of SPS frags and a chalice frag. Tank will be 99% SPS.

yep! I had dry rock that was leaching phosphates and GFO took care of it in 3 days :) got rid of the unsightly hair algae as well

Would it be worthwhile to run cheato in my sump lit 24/7 with one of the HD 6500k clip on lights? In conjunction with the GFO.

I do this too :) keeps the nitrates nice and low and it seems completely unaffected by the GFO as long as you aren't having it put directly on the same side as the cheato.

my phosphates were really high when I started running gfo it would drop but shortly be right back up. Since I had very large tanks I went thru a lot of gfo. as time went buy the numbers stayed down longer and longer. Now I rarely change my gfo and its either 0 or close to it

Same situation here. BRS fiji dry rock. How many months of changing GFO every 3 days until it levels out?

I am having the same issue with Marco rocks. I was cooking it in buckets of Ro for weeks , but still leaching. Changed the water every couple of days. Frustrating waiting to get this issue solved before even starting the cycle. I am taking my time with this new tank though in the long run will be worth it !
