Right now I have a bag of carbon sitting in the return section of my sump. I know this is a very passive way to use. Is there a better way to utilize carbon without a reactor?

How about something like this? It's compact, quiet, reliable. There's a lot of people out there who use them to run carbon/GFO in.

I made a tray out of eggcrate and put it right at the top of my last baffle before the water pours over into the return section. This seems to have worked pretty well IMO. I considered using an old aquaclear like cloak suggested but didn't want another plug and something else to clean :).

I'm not sure what kind of overflow you have but here's another option. You can just drop the bag of carbon right behind the U tube. Piece of cake!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

I think I am going to give this a try:

It sounds like it may keep my cheato from trying to spill over to my return section...killing two birds with one stone.

I actually I just found one of these laying around.

I have a few questions about it in a new thread.

that's not a bad idea to use that aqua clear filter instead of a media reactor.

I simply put it in a media bag and dump it in my filter sock... I also do the same with my GFO.... not the most efficient option but does work.

+1, although I'd go for the AC50 or 70, depending on the size of your tank.

Although, I don't know how much more efficient a HOB power filter is than just having the carbon in the return section of the sump. Nothing beats a Media Reactor for carbon/GFO IMO.
