I have a 55 gallon plastic drum I'm using for my ro/di water storage but I need a vent on it. I was thinking of just drilling a hole in the top and using a boat plug that would be easy to remove and replace when I'm done. Would that be ok or does anyone have a better idea for me?

This is the kind I had in mind they are a lot quicker than the ones you have to screw in to tighten.

Why do you need a vent? Is it a completely sealed container?

Yea the top comes all the way off it has a seal and has a large clamp to hold it on. So I put a float valve in it to keep my water topped off, and a bulkhead at the bottom for a drain. I just need a vent that is easy to remove so when I get water out it comes out faster.

Anyone?

I'm sure that would work. Even a small hole with a piece of tape would work. Do you have to have anything in the hole when not in use? I say just drill a hole around the size of a dime not worry about sealing it if you don't have to.

i have a 50 gal barrel that i use for RODI water and another one for Saltwater mix. it has a lid on it too. i drilled few holes in it for vent and running small pipes through it. keeps water at room temp and keeps dirt and stuff out.

Also, keep in mind all the sealed up moisture can start to "grow". In central FL, I have to clean my 55g drum once every 1-3 months.

If you don't want stuff getting in through the hole just put some type of filter floss or a sponge in the hole. Will allow air though, and stop dirt.

Ok maybe I'll just make a vent and cover it with a screen. I just heard before that ro/di water container is supposed to be as air tight as possible because it can pull tds from the air. Is that true?

Thanks,
Brian

I've heard that to, and it makes since logically. I don't see how a little hole with some screening/sponge would make that much of a difference in TDS though.

I would find that quite surprising if any measurable TDS would be found -- especially in the short periods that the water is stored.

Thanks everyone I drilled just a small hole and that's all I needed the water flows out a lot better now. I just drilled one hole about the size of the ro tubing and super glued some extra window screen material over it to keep bugs out.
