Hi,

My name is Andreas and this is the thread about my reef tank. I live in Oslo, Norway (yeah it's cold here:rolleyes:). We are not that fortunate as the most of you. Here the livestock and corals are very limited in comparison to USA. We can only dream about corals from ORA and Tyree! But I'll try to put up a good sps system with corals that are more rare in Norway (and maybe more usual where you live :)).

This is my system:

(old picture, will update when the system is finished)

Display tank:
150cm x 60cm x 60cm (59x23x23 in inches) 540 litres (143 US gallons)
Sump:
75cm x 40cm x 40cm (29x16x16 in inches) 120 litres (32 US Gallons)

Thank you :)

The AEFW is gone! I dipped the Acros 4 times in 8 weeks. Changed the water in the QT when I dipped them and introduced them to new water. Only found flatworms on the two first dips. Dipped them before introducing them back to the display tank as well. Haven't found any eggs or fw since. I used TM CoralCure pro btw.

Thanks. My Naso harasses both of the Blue Throat Triggers:bum:

The two blue throat triggers did not like each other the first week. The female got a good beating as you can see on the fins on the picture. But they settled down after a couple of days. Now they go along well.

Beautiful setup! I had no idea triggers wouldn't harm corals.

Thank you. These triggers will not harm any corals. But they are known to eat small shrimps, small fish and snails.

Hi maskinsmyg,

Your tank is very clean and the water is crystalline!

What are you using to combat AEFW?
Best Regards!

Thank you.

When I found AEFW I only had a couple of Acroporas. I took them all out and dipped in TM CoralCure Pro, then I fragged the Acros and threw away the ones that had eggs on them. Then I had them in QT for 8 weeks. I dipped them 4 times each in the quarantine time. I changed the water in the QT every time I dipped. And then I finally dipped them a last time and introduced them to the display tank. I have not seen any more flatworms or eggs since the second dip :)

Now I dip every coral that are going in to the system. If you use Coral Cure you should leave the coral in the dip for 10-15 minutes. Then shake the coral well so flatworms or other pest fall to the bottom. Then it's good to go :)

Edit: I also have a sixline wrasse and a black leopard wrasse that may eat fw just in case. But I doubt any of them will.

Thanks. My Naso harasses both of the Blue Throat Triggers:bum:

The two blue throat triggers did not like each other the first week. The female got a good beating as you can see on the fins on the picture. But they settled down after a couple of days. Now they go along well.

Funny it's the opposite in my situation, my naso is the most passive fish in my tank.

I'm having problems with my bluethroat pair and looks kinda like what you were having. My male bluethroat will actually go up to my female and start to take bits out of him!! I feel bad for her, but hoping they get along because having a pair of blue's swimming together is amazing! Should I be worried that the male might take her out or do you think they'll eventually get along. I've seen pair before and never thought they would fight, but seeing you had a problem before make it a things easier! thanks

How long have they been arguing? When I introduced the female to the tank they argued about 7 days before thing settled down. My male also bit the female. It looked kinda nasty, but she only damaged her fins.

When they start swimming upwards in circles it's definetly worth it:wave:

Thank you, Monties are my favorite to :)

Get outta here yours swim in circles together!!!:eek2: That's incredible I hope for mine to do that one day. What a site that must be!

I introduced my blue's together I heard some grunting noise and never thought anything of it. The male started to become very aggressive and they would quarrel. When I saw this I immediately took her out out of fear should would be killed. She's been in my sump and I actually put her back in my tank today before I ever saw your thread, came across it today. His been going at her today, I hope she settles back in fine. :uhoh2: Nice to hear from someone with the same pair!

Nice looking setup. FYI... your regal looks like a Red Sea because of the yellow belly. Indo and Fiji have a grey belly. I've been reading a lot of about the Regal Angels lately because I want one :-). What all do you feed your Regal Angel?

selje
06/14/2011, 07:05 AM
Thank you Clowndude. Yes I know it's from the Red Sea. I've heard that the Red Sea specimens have a better chance to survive and eat than the other two.

I was very lucky with mine. He took frozen food like mysis and artemia after one day in the tank. After three days it took flake food (Ocean Nutrition Formula One) and after 6 days it took Ocean Nutrition Forumla Two Small pellets. After 7 days it took the Angel Formula Frozen Food (with sponges). I don't feed the formula one anymore. Have changed to Prime Reef Flakes from Ocean Nutrition.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is that whether you plan a very elaborate tank, or design a simple, clean display you can have a truly awesome looking fish tank. I've seen tanks that have elaborate woodwork, tons of gadgets, and take up huge areas in a house. Others, like yours, are much simpler, work with the surrounding interior design, and turn into little gems. Very nicely done.

Hi, you've got a beautifull scale of impressive frags there...
You must have a great dealer near by you wich has these wonderfull corals in stock.
Here in the Netherlands most of your frags are collectors items.
I love to see when these corals are grownout colonies, your tank will be one off the best then.

Actually our dealers here doesn't have any rare corals. I actually got some of my corals from De Jong in Netherland (Rainbow Monti and Solitaryensis). The rest I have switched with fellow reefers.

Love your tank too btw. I checked it out and WOW you've got some nice colonies! Love your deepwater Acros. Those are my favorites :)

Acropora Loripes and a Monti cap.

http://seljevold.com/saltvann/full/juli/070711/IMG_1323.jpg

This is a lovely Acro. To me it looks closer to A. rosaria. The pictured coral has dome shaped axial corallites and all corallite walls are thick. In contrast to A. rosaria, Veron descibes A. loripes has having "tubular axial corallites which may be naked on one side, and more widely spaced radial corallites". Once the colony matures, we will know for sure.

Acropora Lokani (?).

http://seljevold.com/saltvann/full/juli/070711/IMG_1343.jpg

I think it may be A. caroliniana based on the evident pocket like radial corallites and the"tapering, axial and incipient axial corallites curving upwards or pointing in different directions".

Definately not a.caroliniana or a.lokani. Both have more tapered coralite tips (pointy).

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Are you saying that the axial corallites are more tubular in shape with those two species?

All three share structural similarities and both A. caroliniana and A. multiacuta have tapered axial corallites as Veron describes A. multiacuta with "branches consisting primarily of extremely long tapered axial corallites". To me the coral in question does not appear to have long enough axial corallites to be A. multiacuta. It does however, appear to have tapered corallites.

(I think its worth mentioning that A. caroliniana doesn't always have tapering corallites).

I'm not completely ruling out A. multiacuta, just voicing some concerns with the ID.

Could this one possibly be M. capitata? I don't think M. verrucosa show the branching that your coral does. Veron notes that this species has skeletal detail "similar to that of Montipora verrucosa, which does not form primarily branched colonies". http://sdmas.com/corals/457.php

Thank you. I got my Setosa frag from a fellow reefer in Norway. He imported it as a tiny frag from the US a couple of years ago.

Could this one possibly be M. capitata? I don't think M. verrucosa show the branching that your coral does. Veron notes that this species has skeletal detail "similar to that of Montipora verrucosa, which does not form primarily branched colonies". http://sdmas.com/corals/457.php

I think you are right! Thank you :) Def. Capitata. I have another Monti that I know is Verrucosa. And that only encrusts. Thanks!

Beautiful tank and corals, my compliments! How do you like the Vortech compared to the Tunze's? I'm not sure which one to buy for my next upgrade.

Leonardo

Thank you Leonardo. I love the Vortechs. I had three 6045 nanostreams and one 6101 turbellestream before. And the flow can't be compared. The 6101 and the Vortech is supposed to have the same max flow (12 000 litres per hour). But the Vortech MP40w ES is much stronger.

I took a little video of them, you can see here if you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu0L0EVC4HA

You can see the flow generated at the end. The first 40 seconds is to show the soundlevel from the pumps.

Would you be interested in selling me a frag off your setosa? I cant get hold of any in England.

I would need it posted by express overnight courier.

Im obviously happy to arrange and pay postage costs and send you all the materials needed to package the coral for postage.

No problem if you dont want to sell me a frag, I'll understand.

Are you sure? I have A. Valida and that is not very similar to this one:crazy1:

I'm not sure at all honestly. I was mostly just pointing out some skeletal similarities. A. valida can exhibit a variety of growth forms, so it wouldn't be abnormal to have two individuals that look different.

Hi,

Sorry, can't do that because of CITES regulation. I can't take the risk for sending it without Cites papers, so I'm sorry. Mine is only a frag either way, so it's not possible to take a frag before it have grown muchmuch more :) But if you are in Norway, Oslo let me know:wave:

I'm pretty sure it's not a Valida. Acropora Kirstyae (http://sdmas.com/corals/38.php) is the one I've found so far that looks similar. What do you think?

HI, I see that you use balling, how do you like it so far?
I'm using it too ( 250 ml pr day )
Do you also use trace elements with it?
When your corals grow you're gonna need more of it.

Very nice pictures of beautiful frags....:wavehand:

Thank you Nightwish :)

There is some trace elements in the balling like iodine, strontium and some kind of mix with iron or something. I also dose Amino Acids from Korallen Zucht once every day. I also dose Coral Snow from Korallen Zucht, but that's mainly to get rid of some cyano :)

Hehe, thank you. I like to know the corals latin names :) I hate the "store" names like "Green Slimer", "Joe the coral" and similar, because we don't use those names in Norway, and I don't understand what coral everyone is talking about :p

It's not that hard, you should give it a try ;)

Yeah I hate it when the fish is stupid enough to jump. They have to jump over the rim that is about 10cm +. I don't have netting yet, but I wonder if I should install some :) I'll have to buy a new wrasse. I want a fish that is known to eat troublemakers if you know what i mean :) Maybe Halichoeres Iridis or a regular leopard wrasse will be my next purchase.

Lost a colony due to STN a couple of weeks ago. So I panicked when I saw that my Multiacuta was beginning to loose tissue. The first lightbulb going on in my head said AEFW. I took out the colony and gave it a bath in Lugols solution. The coral got a funny color in my kitchen lightning:hmm4:

http://seljevold.com/saltvann/full/august/250811/IMG_2642.jpg

Here you can see the dead tissue.

http://seljevold.com/saltvann/full/august/250811/IMG_2643.jpg

After 15 minutes in the dip I was relieved when I didn't find any flatworms or any eggs. Phew! But why is this colony loosing tissue? It has colored out greatly the last month. I may think it is too little flow that is causing this? I moved one of the Vortechs so it's getting more flow now. Hope this will make it happy. Took some frags just in case. Appreciate if some of you experienced sps reefers can give me some feedback or tips.

Here it is the next day after dipping. Still good colour. My dip-bowl isn't that big, so almost every tip of the coral got a rough treatment:(

Thank you Lenoardo. I am currently using this combination:

ATI AquaBlue Special 80w
ATI AquaBlue Special 80w
ATI Blue Plus 80w
ATI AquaBlue Special 80w
ATI Blue Plus 80w
ATI AquaBlue Special 80w

But I am thinking of changing to this combination:

ATI AquaBlue Special 80w
ATI Purple Plus 80w
ATI Blue Plus 80w
ATI AquaBlue Special 80w
ATI Blue Plus 80w
ATI AquaBlue Special 80w

Does any one know the difference between Pure Actinic and Blue Plus? Please recommend any combination you have succeded with :)

I just switched from the combination you are thinking of going over to as I did not like that combo one bit. Colors seemed washed out to me and nothing seemed to really pop in the tank. I switched to 3 blueplus, 1 purple plus and 2 aquablue specials and like it a lot more. Corals started to really pop especially the blue's and purples. Soon I will be going to 4 blueplus and replacing 1 more bluespecial. So my final combo will be:

4-blueplus
1-purpleplus
1-aquablue special

I have heard that the pure actinic doesn't put out no where near the par that the blueplus puts out. Just my two cents

Hi clowndude! Thank you for the recommendation. Maybe I'll go for this combo:

ATI Blue Plus
ATI AquaBlue Special
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Purple Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI AquaBlue Special

I find the light with 4 AquaBlue special kinda intense. But I think the combo above should be good? I'm looking forward to adding the Purple Plus.

Not sure what fixture you run, but for mine I run a blueplus and purpleplus for a damn/dusk effect and it really brings out the colors. I get about a 15K look with the combo I suggested. The old combo that you were thinking about going to gave me more of a 12K look and I didn't like it at all. Of course I like more of a blue look. I can defiantly say that the corals have more pop when I went to the new combo though. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Thank you. I got brown algea because my skimmer suddenly stopped skimming. This went on for two weeks and this happened the same time as I took out my biopellets reactor. I've fixed the skimmer now and the algeas are on it's way back. I'm taking out the BP reactor when the algeas are completely gone.

Thank you. A shame that it died. My mandarin is always in front of the tank. It's actually difficult to take pictures sometimes when the mandarin wants to show off:crazy1:

This Acropora Solitaryensis take ages to color out. You can see a slight color of purple on some of the little tips. But it has been like that a while. I've moved the MP40 pump that was located right in front to see if the coral got to heavy flow. Now the Acropora look more healthy but still no color!

I use a pretty simple setup. I bought a good skimmer (Deltec TC1655) and one Biopellets reactor. I use the Balling+ method for maintaining the KH, CA and MG levels. In addition I add Amino Acids (currently using Salifert), potassium (Brightwell) to raise the blue color and some additives from KZ (Sponge Power, B-Balance, Coral Snow etc). I only add the Sponge Power from KZ atm. But I will start adding B-Balance and CS soon. I am struggling with some Cyano bacterias atm. Coral Snow helped me with this before, so I'll try again.

I rarely change water. I think I've changed water four times since I build the tank (in march 2011). When I change water I change around 13 gallons (10%). I use carbon (Rowa) in a bag in the sump. That's the only filtration I use besides liverock. I have around 30-40 kg of LR in the tank. 10 kg in the sump and rest in the display.

How often do you feed your tank and how do you go about phosphate removal?

selje
01/29/2012, 03:37 PM
I feed twice a day around 5pm and 8pm. I feed with Ocean Nutrition Formula one and two (both flakes and pellets), green/red noori and frozen artemia/mysis. I feed with Noori and frozen around 3 days a week. I use Biopellets to remove nitrate and phosphate. I also feed some of my LPS with Reef pearls once a week if they are lucky.

Thank you. I will start with coral snow next week. Hope my Cyano will be history! It's very hard to find these kind of corals in Norway. Especially ORA (There has only been one ORA import to Norway, the only coral I know from that import was the blue milli). We don't have any WISYWIG like liveaquaria/reeffarmers etc here in Norway. I have collected the nicest corals in tanks around my area. Some of the bigger colonies like Suharsonoi, Loripes, Granulosa and Millepora are imported directly from Indonesia (wild colonies). Now I have to see which corals I will keep and sell the rest. I don't have space for all the frags right now. But it's so hard to look at a potencial winner at the LFS and not buy it:headwally:

You're tank is my definitive favorite here on RC. You have all the corals we dream of in Norway:spin2:

Beautiful copperband butterfly.

Have you tried feeding him live blackworms? Mine goes crazy for them and is already trained to eat them right out of the end of a turkey baster, even though I have only had him for a couple of weeks. Mine has not touched any aiptasia yet for me either.

It doesn't look like the mouth abrasion will interfere with eating and should heal on its own. Good luck with him and keep us updated on his progress.

Joe

Thank you for the tips. The Copperband is not eating anything yet. But it's still alive and looks healthy. I think it may eat some of the copepods on my liverock or something. I hope it will eat aiptasia soon. My tank is overgrown :(

Got an ID on this frag. Acropora Nobilis.

This is supposed to be Acropora Efflorescens from Wet thumbs. Does anyone of you have this coral? Does it look like yours? I know this is a small frag, so I hope it will develop the branches closer when it gets bigger. But for know the corallites may point to Acropora Solitaryensis perhaps?

This Acropora is a "Rainbow" Tortuosa from RF. From pictures I've seen of bigger frags I think the "rainbow" tag is an overstatement:hmm4: I thought this frag was dead, but after a week in the tank I saw a couple of polyps on the base that was alright. Look at it now :)

Meteorshower Cyphastrea. This is not common in Norway!

I sold my last Pocillipora Damicornis about a year ago. Look what is popping out of my LR now! Damn pest coral:headwally:

I have a good camera. No doubt about that. Cheap too! (in Norway the price is around 1100 USD with 18-55mm IS II) I use Canon EOS 600D with pretty cheap lenses (EF-S 18-55mm IS II and EF-S 60mm macro).

Hmm, there was a post over #240 yesterday from some guy that I had a good camera, but now it's gone:eek1:

Here's more pictures.

This was fragged from a big colony that was imported as Acropora Caroliniana. My frag look more similar to Lokani perhaps?

Thank you :)

Here is a stag. It's supposed to have blue corallites. Pain to take pictures of.

Acropora Granulosa.

Montipora Undata/Verruculosus (imported as Undata).

Haven't seen this Acropora Loripes from above in a couple of months. Took a frag yesterday and was suprised that the corallites in the base was beginning to get a red color. Looking forward to see if this Loripes will color out. Hard to take picture with one hand and holding the coral with the other, that's why the quality is so poor.

Great looking tank. I really like the growth and tank progression pictures!

Your collection is unreal. Its hard enough to get some of those "named" corals in Canada, I can only imagine what it is like in Norway.

Great stuff.

Thanks Darryl, your tank is an inspiration to all of us sps freaks:celeb2:

Most of the sps in the area is from Indonesia or Bali. Not been an import from the US in a couple of years as far as i know. So ORA and other "names" from the US is almost impossible to get my hands on.

Here's a new batch of pictures!

Not sure about ID on this one. I thought it was Acropora Valida when I got it, but not so sure now. This has had an "unlucky" position in the tank. Now it's on the sand to get some light. And it is beginning to color up again now. I only call it Acropora sp. purple/green. It's too big for my tank so I will probably sell it. Just need to get some color on it first, brown corals are hard to sell:spin2:

Had to move my Awi (former Multiacuta) down to the bottom too. I saw that it was beginning to loose some tissue at the bottom base. When I moved it I saw three gigantic Aiptasia at the rock where the corals was placed. I hate those Aiptasia! My Chelmon show no interest in them and I am starting to get angry:headwally:

http://www.seljevold.com/saltvann/full/mars/040312/IMG_0582.jpg

This Turaki is getting huge! Almost drowns the Setosa and Caroliniana.

http://www.seljevold.com/saltvann/full/mars/040312/IMG_0589.jpg

Good growth on the Montipora Australiensis too. Almost to good if you ask me. Some of the encrusting Monti's in my tank is starting to take too much space.

A frag of an Acropora Desalwii.

http://www.seljevold.com/saltvann/full/mars/040312/IMG_0596.jpg

My Acropora "Pearlberry" (unsure of the correct ID though) is my jewel in the tank. The color is ok too?

Please try to look away from the Cyano at the bottom. I'm trying to get rid of it, but it's not easy. Been adding Coral Snow for a week, but it's still there. I've taken out the cyano manually a couple of days in the week. But it doesn't help a bit. What to do? I've started to not care about it anymore and I hope it will get tired of annoying me and slowly get the ** out of my tank on it's own.

Hey man, i'm lost for words, your corals are unreal! Thumbs up!

About the cyano: I've had similar problem, all the bottom were covered with the same color cyano. What was really confusing, is that all the water parameters were spot on! Here's the real problem: It looks like you never siphoned your bottom and thats where the sand bed becomes a detritus trap/bank and then becomes a nutrient factory. After i started siphoning my bottom, it was gone! Just a food for thought

Good luck!

Thank you :) I'll start to siphon the sandbed. Hopefully it will help me too :)
