I use a mixture of both. Shallow.

Sand. Crushed coral will allow detritus to filter down through it and accululate underneath it which then elevates nitrates. It's easier for sand dwelling critters like nassarius snails, ceriths, conchs, cucumbers to sift and clean the sand bed.

Crushed coral becomes a nitrate factory over time, go with sand!

I keep it very shallow and stir it often. The corals open up nice when I do it.

there seems to be different types of crushed coral. are some better than others?
is it always a nitrate problem, even if vacuumed?

i think i've seen sps tanks with cc?

"a reef in the sky?"

I've got crushed coral and I have SPS.
Although, in my next tank i'll definitely change back to sand. It's easier to maintain and in my opinion looks nicer too

what depth?

why easier? doesn't sand need vacuuming too?

any nitrate problem?

when does sand end and cc begin? 2mm, 3mm, 4mm.
people seem to love tropic island reeflakes and that's very coarse stuff.

Fine sand for me.. It gets annoying when it blows around but you just have to adjust your powerheads just right

I like the natural look of sand and the aragonite helps buffer the tank....
