I feed too much. I feed live clams, live bloodworms, mysis shrimp, spectrum pellets, frozen spirulina algae, algae sheets, and frozen angel formula with sponge. Most of these I alternate, but i feed mysis twice daily.

I think I got the bubbleking skimmer from PA, but I'm not sure it was a long time ago.

Great tank, how come it looks like there are pictures from two different stages. in one set there is a large monti cap in the bottom center and in another it isnt there?

I was trying to free up the middle a bit where most of the current goes and moved the large green cap. Originally my design is two islands with the current going in circles around each island. A lot of flow is designed to go between the islands. Apparently the coral like this as they've grown in the middle, to the point where flow is more limited. I'm actually going to weed out more coral tomorrow, try and further improve flow.

Congrats on the TOTM. Tank is truly stunning. May I ask how on earth you were able to get a moorish idol to live?

Hi Tylor,

You have an extraordinary reef aquarium!!! Has your moorish idol ever bothered your coral?

Great looking tank! It's almost the same measurements of the upgrade I am currently planning.

Is there anything that you would've done differently with this one if you could get a "do-over"?

Thanks,

Chad

Beautiful tank! I've got a question about your pink goniopora. Do you spot feed it and with what, do you add phyto? If you could share your experience with us please. Tks.

Sorry for the delay in reply, I've been traveling overseas the past couple weeks. Every time I travel it's a worry, and definitely not so good for the tank.

Regarding the MI, I've never seen him eat coral but he does like to pick at some pesky caulerpa I have. I feed him a large variety of food. One key might be the frozen angel formula that has sponge in it. I also feed spectrum pellets, nori, live clam, used to feed live bloodworm but not lately, and other stuff. I also think it's key that his tank mates aren't very aggressive, even the achilles is pretty well behaved. Actually the MI is probably the most aggressive fish i have.

There are lots of pictures of the early tank and fish room equipment in my thread on RC. The thread is three years running now and is located in the large tank thread area under '480gl elos braceless earthquake trap'.

I used to feed the pink goniopora phyto and rotifers for the first couple years. I quit about three years ago, and it's still doing fine. I was worried about adding too many nutrients. It might have limited the gonio's growth, but health is good. One side affect i noticed is less polyp extension from the sps coral after i quit phyto, however, could be that i have two small angel fish.

Definitely I've spent a fair amount on premium equipment and the cabinetry. However, I have managed to keep electricity costs down by using no chiller, very efficient pumps and powerheads, and my primary lighting is only three 400 watt metal halides. Plus I've done countless hours of my own labor, which i haven't charged myself for.

Beautiful set up! Hopefully the wife forgave. Better yet, hopefully she will end up compromising and embracing your other luv too. Of course that would mean you might need to love something she has a passion for as well! ;) lol

Lorie, the wife has pretty much forgiven, and now that the tank is a big part of the living room reminds me to work on it from time to time.

Well Im so happy for you! hehehehe

IT is quite an accomplishment, I almost had my first 220 gallon recently, but long story short.....I still have my 125 and am very happy! :0

good luck!

the 220 leaked and I was too scared to keep it even after it was professional sealed, so luckily my 125 didnt sell! My tank is no where as nice as yours, but good suggestions on aquiring frags cheaply. I need cheap. In school and working part time. :)

stunning! I like the story of the transition to the larger tank, reminds me of me :)

I may have missed it, how long have you had the MI?

InsaneClownFish
06/27/2011, 10:44 PM
Grats. :)

tylorarm
06/27/2011, 10:56 PM
I've had the MI for about 2.5 years or so.

Best way to get frags cheap is from another reefer of course. I just gave away a bunch of huge frags/colonies, but too bad you don't live around here. Once things take off you pretty much have to trim things anyway, especially as some corals grow so much faster than others.

06/29/2011, 02:56 PM
Great fish! Is that a red Goniopora in middle front? If so, how long have you had it, and was it tank raised when you got it?

Disregard Goni question, I just read about the Goni above. I have the same one and don't feed Phyto or anything in particular. I believe I read this particular species of Goni doesn't require direct feeding. I've had mine for about a year, I have it placed in about the same place you do in the middle.

Beautiful tank! Gorgeous Achilles Tang. I'm curious if the cowfish nips at the coral or not. My coral are not very big and probably wouldn't like this. But I always wanted to try a cowfish/boxfish because they would be easy to remove if they were a problem. I thought Regal angels ate coral, too. I have a lot to learn.

A very deserving recognition. Congrats. I noticed you have a Morish Idol in your tank, a fish that I am dying to have. I thought it's not reef safe. How do you go about keeping it in your reef tank?
