so my question is my tanks was set at 72 the heater is in my sump but i noticed my tank temp shot to 78 which it has stayed at so far but i believe its caused by my return pump and my skimmer pump running. Is there anyway to control this without a chiller?? I dont have the room for one right now and dont have the funds either :headwallblue:

Keeping 72 degrees without a chiller is going to be hard. Why are you keeping that low?

78 degrees is fine for everything I can think of

I agree 78 is fine. If it gets warmer you can put a fan blowing accross the water in the sump and tank, also a fan blowing cool air into the canopy. You can also freeze some water is a couple of small bottles and then put the frozen bottle in the sump, once it melts put it back in the freezer and exchange it for another.

or...get a chiller!

I agree unless your keeping temperate cold water fish and such 78 is a fine temp to keep the tank at.

if the room temp stays at 75, there is no way you can get 72 degrees in the tank with out a chiller, fans may help, but prob. won't keep it that low after pumps and lights are running.

i have always kept it between 72 to 76 but have never gotten any higher than 76 but i recently changed tanks to my project 50 gal Bowfront so the sump is a new experience for me since my 40 gal didn't have one i used a canister filter for that one.

The question was never answered "Why do you want to keep the temp at 72degrees?" That is to low for a Reef Tank. They should be kept at 78 -82 no higher.

I have always had it at that temp with no issue all corals and fish are growing and thriving at that temp but my main concern is that with it at 78 I don't want it to rise any higher

78-81 is fine. I keep mine at 80-81 with no problems.

ya higher temps will not be a problem. a lower temp can be more of a problem
