Yay! But...they ate the eggs before I could get a shot. Here they are laying. Pics are a bit noisy because I didn't want to disturb them with the flash.

Beautiful fish. It is common for them to eat the first few spawns. Sometimes it takes them a few tries to get them fertilized, healthy, etc. Keep feeding them lots of good quality foods and they should keep spawning for you.

There is plenty of good information in books and on the internet about raising clownfish. Good luck if you decide to do it.

If we can successfully raise the fry, we'll put them up for sale. I have some local folks who are already putting in their dibs. :)

woogie...how old is this pair?

edit: let me rephrase...do you know the actual age of these clown? I've heard that only a mature pair (2+ years old) will start to spawn

Woogiekids
06/06/2011, 11:38 AM
No, I don't know the actual age. If I had to guesstimate based on size when I received them, I would say 1.5-2 years?

Good timing! I just came back to the office from checking on the pair at home, since they were showing frantic mating behavior this morning. They are in the process of laying right now. This will be their second batch, and so far they have only eaten a few lighter colored ones that I assume were no good.

When I left after an hour, they were still going at it, with about 100 eggs on the rock (last time they only had a dozen or so cream colored ones, and ate them all). Both male and female were doing their jobs, and the Starry Blenney was sitting right above them on the rock chasing after the Damsels when they got too close. Like a little bodyguard. :)

I'm hopeful that they will still be there when I get home! I don't know if we'll try and raise this batch, or let it go one more round. Still have to start the Rot cultures.

And as always, I took a bazillion pics, and will post them later when I get home. I'm going to try and keep this thread up to date as a log for myself as well. :)

Woogiekids
06/25/2011, 06:13 PM
OK, wrong about the eye spots, merely cyano forming on the egg. Boo!! About 1/2 the eggs have disappeared, and here are some shots of the remaining. I'd say there are about 75 left.

When the eggs turn from orange to brown is when you know they are fertile... If tuning white they are no good... Great looking pair it's easy to pair but raising the frys is a lot of work... Good luck

When do they generally turn brown? I dong think that this batch was fertilized. They still look the same, about 36 hours in.

If I may....start feeding the pair very heavy on mysis shrimp cyclopez and a good flake food or pellet food. You should see s much larger clutch off eggs.

07/11/2011, 08:28 AM
Also from the last set of pictures your eggs are nit being fertilized . If you have a large amount of water flow shutdown your pumps when they spawn.

Woogiekids
07/11/2011, 08:53 AM
I'm using a Canon Rebel with the MPE-65 lens.

Thanks for the tips trueblackpercula! How can you tell they have been fertilized this early? The last batch had 1 whole egg that was fertilized out of the bunch, but it didn't look any different until the end of day 2 when it started to change.

Honestly, the MPE-65 lens is the star. I don't see a lens in your line-up above is a true dedicated macro lens. So, if you wanted to try and get the close-ups like I do, I would either go for the MPE-65 (the BEST!!), or the 100L. Even the Tamron 90mm is a good fit for a cheaper price.

I don't crop much at all, and keep my settings around 1/200, apr 16-18, ISO 200. I use a strong flash (the twinlights work best for the MPE-65), so that I can get maximum depth of field, and a quick shutter.

As for post-processing, usually just some work on the tone in CS5, and I use MCP Actions (which I adore) Magic Contrast, and Magic Clarity.

Hope that helps!

I must ask this question are your fish wild caught or from a very large breeder like ORA or CQUEST?

Woogiekids
07/12/2011, 11:19 AM
I assume they're ORA, since that's where my LFS tends to get his clowns, but I honestly don't remember asking. I can ask him if he remembers?

trueblackpercula
07/12/2011, 04:03 PM
I think you need to feed them a medicated flake food if the problem persist with the active ingrediante called Metronidazole. This helped me out with a pair I had and after months if trying everything this was the solution. Good luck and post some pictures of what the eggs look like today.

Your right, no true Macro lenses. That will soon change as I love taking pictures of my tank.:headwally:

I have a pair of ORAŽ Misbar Fancy Ocellaris Clownfish from LiveAquaria. Not sure of their age but they were around 2" long, one was just a little shorter and the other a little longer.

I wonder how old LiveAquaria sells the ORA Clownfish that are tank bred? I'm just hoping and waiting to see if they will host in a RBTA. I know this is not the proper anemone for these types of Clowns but I have seen on RC where they have taken to the RBTA as a host.

When might mine start the breeding process? :love2:

Mine starting breeding 9 months after I got them, and right after the female went on a growth spurt, and now is 3 times bigger than the male almost.

I take them through the glass. I just made sure to position their rock and anemone close enough to the glass that the MPE-65 can reach (since it's a prime lens, 1:1 ratio-no zooming).

38el
07/15/2011, 07:43 AM
Awe, yes. The MP-E 65mm is a fix lens. I guess I'm going to need to look more towards a zoom with macro lens since I have a 220 gal and my reef is at varied distances from the front (Starfire) glass. My reef rock was built more towards the back of the tank and tried to simulate a natural reef in miniature. My tank is 24" from the front to back.

I didn't even think about it but my kit lens that came with my 7D, the 28-135 allows for Macro. Although it is not the best glass in the world, it tried it out on my reef and I think I can get the shots I need, but not near as good as yours.

Keep this eggs coming along with your pictures. You need to quit your job so you can baby sit your mating pair and we can have pictures all day long. LOL

Thanks for you dedication to this hobby and helping others.

Usually with parents gobbling up the eggs can be due to malnourished... Feed them often with fatty high protein frozen food or make your own. Good luck Plus it takes them time to learn too...

Woogiekids
07/15/2011, 11:31 AM
I've been feeding them twice a day:

Morning: Spectrum Pellets
Afternoon: Slurry of mysis, reef caviar, bloodworms, garlic and more pellets.

Should I increase to three times a day? I have a feeling it's just their learning curve. :)

nemoboy1
07/15/2011, 11:57 AM
That's a good amount of variety food... But how much are you feeding them per feed??? I have a big system so I usually feed them until their stomach swollens up... If you don't have a skimmer then be cautious to ammonia rising when feeding too much or do frequent water changes... Like you said could just be they are learning... Every pair is different my female ate the eggs the first time too but she stop there after now I'm on my six batch of clowns... Batch 2 and 3 didn't survive because I was on a trial and error class's myself.. 4 and 5 is growing and eating like pigs... 6 on it's way... They are like clock work every week so far... But I will post a thread about it when the time is right... Again good luck

Woogiekids
07/15/2011, 12:01 PM
Hmmm...not a huge amount, because they're in our smallest system (28G JBJ). Maybe I'll try upping it a bit more. I think they're also on the younger side. I have three other pairs of clowns (in different tanks, obviously) that are older, and haven't starting mating yet.

Start a thread with yours! I'd love to see your process.

Ok try my advice first and then move on.
Feed the medicated flake food 5 to 7 times a day.
Lower power heads or shut of water flow when they spawn.
Do not remove the eggs the parents are they best thing for them.
Using an airstone over the clutch of eggs can cause deformed fry....happened to me more then once. If your going to remove the eggs remove them the day they are ready to hatch and place an airstone close to the eggs but make sure the bubbles do not touch them.
Good luck and keep the pictures rolling....

The last egg has left the building. :(

Tbp, I'll try the medicated food. Turning off the power heads did seem to help, as more were fertilized this go around. Thanks for the tips!

Haven't posted in years, but have been in the forum the last day or two.

Anyway some further thoughts and advice.

Use situation feeding, which is basically feeding them slowly by hand allowing them to catch what is dropped in front of those noses until they turn their nose up at it. Don't worry too much about the male, he will fill MUCH quicker than the female, and frankly her feeding is more important because she is the one doing the vast majority of the work. You can feed once a day with this method using high quality foods, multiple feedings are better, but you can squeak by with one using this method.

If its your intention to raise fry from this pair, get them started on a removable substraight, e.g. tile or pot. Trying to remove hatchlings from a working tank is well, kind of insanely hard and typically a waste of time and effort as the results are so poor in terms of numbers. Keep in mind you are going to have a significant die off between newly hatched fry and "big enough to leave home". As a new "breeder" you should be jumping for joy is you get 20% of a hatch to 6 months. With years of experience you should be jumping for joy with 70% to 6 months.

If you haven't already read my posts in the FAQs of the forum related to spawning and breeding, do take the time.

Last, I don't mean to bust your bubble, but please keep in mind that the bars on those clowns are not something that is a hard and fast genetic trait that will be passed on to the fry. I know ORA put a TON of time and selective breeding in to get to the point that they can offer a "product" of these mis-barred clowns. I would be surprised if more than 10% of the fry showed the same mis-barring. Bottom line, do not expect to see lots and lots of little clowns that have the same mis-barring as the parents. I would however expect to see lots of mis-barring in general, spots, unconnected bars, missing bars, missing on one side, etc, etc along with lots of normally barring.

JHardman, Thanks so much for the thoughtful post! I would be happy with just a fry or two making it at this point. :)

I find the intricacy of the genetics one of the most interesting pieces of the process. Almost like opening a clam, and never knowing exactly what kind of pearl you are going to find. It won't bother me one bit to have all different patterned fry.

Here are a few macro pics of today. Day 3. Interesting that about 1/3 of the fry are backwards. Those seem to not be developing well, on the whole.

Alright, so bad news. They all hatched...straight into the maxi-minis. The ones that didn't feed the maxis ended up in the chromis bellies. I managed to rescue 3, and they're in the fry tank, but I obviously don't have high hopes... :(

So, strategy for next time...I'm putting a clay pot in tomorrow so that the clowns will lay on it (next lay will be Sunday). On hatch night, I will move them all into the fry tank.

Thanks for all the advice and good fry thoughts!

simply stunning shots. holy cow. if you dont have room for a pot, try different sizes of porcelain tiles and put it where they are laying the eggs. tiles are easier to remove and airate while waiting to hatch.

Dr Wilkerson's book is ok. Great Pics also! Can't get enough of them!

1 question, how did you get them to lay on the pot? Did you just place it where they normally spawn and hope that they would spawn on it?

Also, have you done anything extra to entice their spawning together?

Alright, uncross those fingers Tanya. Sadness eggs. :( Only a few hatched last night, and the rest died. I think either:

1) It was too hot
2) I pulled them too early and the didn't get enough oxygenation (although I did have an air stone)
3) My husband turned on the kitchen light, and aborted the hatching, and...?

The ones that did hatch died. So, instead of baby pics, you get to see nassarius eating egg pics. :(
