Best to read, read and read as much as possible, however a couple of tips, firstly listen to adriennes advise she gave above, then my view would be to get the largest tank you can afford to accomodate and afford, this hobby is adictive and it is normal to want more stock and decide what type of tank you want, fish only, Soft Coral, or a mixed reef etc, then you can decide on what equipment is needed after reading the stickies mentioned, My view on skimmers is they are essential, however you will get mixed reviews about this, so get reading and welcome to the site.
Kind Regards

DO NOT TAKE WHAT LFS SAY AS GOSPEL. You will get great advice here. Read the posts. We all had to start. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes I am afraid of sounding dumb but more than likely someone else is looking got the help. WELCOME:wavehand:

I'm new to the hobby as well (couple of months) and can only speak about my limited experience.
I will second, third, etc. what everyone else has said and read as much as you can. Read books, magazines, reef forums, etc. Then ask a ton of questions. This is just like any other hobby that everyone starts with no knowledge and then gains it over time.
As for me I bought an AIO system from Red Sea Max and have so far been happy. I will say that I wish I would have went bigger because now I find myself looking for a deal on a bigger setup and the wife says not yet. Damn!
I'm not sure what everyone else says, but I bought my LR/LS from a guy that was breaking down his saltwater tank, but it had been up and running for five years, so when I added it to my system I had a very short cycle, which was nice.
Now I have started to slowly add CUC, corals and fish, which is much more fun than watching a tank cycle.
I also imagine this is going to also be a lot like my boat though...Break Out Another Thousand!
Good luck

+1 on getting the biggest tank you can afford! It sucks when you're only a few months in and already want a bigger tank for more corals and fish. Only if I knew what I knew now back when I first begun, life would be much better! lol.
