hi ladies and gents,
i have tangs im trying to find nori for. i got a pack from a local asian market but it gets soggy, fluffy and basically looks like an algae puff after a few hours. is that normal?

Yup. After a little while it gets rehydrated and basically falls apart. You can't expect it to stay dried out in the tank water.

i forgot to mention that tangs eat it at first but after it sogs up, it breaks into little pieces that float around the tank and drive me crazy. is there better quality stuff or all nori is like that?

That's the nature of pressed sheets of ground up seaweed. The little fluff pieces that come off feed your CUC.

I wouldnt expect it to be sturdy, but my nori doesnt fall apart....it is rare that the tangs would let it go all day, but I have never seen it "disintegrate" or anything like that. It holds up pretty well.

Feed less, more often.

I feel ya...one thing I do is to fold up the nori and insert it in one of those mesh feeder clips. Helps keep it contained.

I feed a quarter sheet at a time, fold it up until you only have about 1/4"-1/2" hanging from the clip, then I cut it into strips, it helps when they bite it they take small pieces that they can eat instead of large chunks that end up floating around

Really any of the brands they sell at the asian market will do, however I stay away from the ones with high iron contents. The ones that are around 2% daily dose seem to work well.

Ocean Nutrition's algae sheets do not swell up and disintigrate like regular nori does. I tried some like what the Asian stores sell and had that same problem. For me it is worth the extra money for this stuff as it does not go to waste most of the time.

I use multiple different kinds...including julian sprungs. Julians works well, but the asian nori I have also works well.
Dont go cheap on this stuff...get the high end stuff. Wont come apart. Ill try and take a picture of mine when I get home.

I fold it over several times, tear it into 1/2 inch squares and mix it in the water that I thaw the frozen food in. I don't like the clips. All my tangs do is pull it off the clip. This way I'm sure they eat it.

Cut it up in thin strips after you put it in the clip, the fish take what they want without tearing off more then they can chew. Ocean Nutrition is $5-$6 for 10 little sheets, I get 30 large sheets of nori at the Asian market for $4.....when you go through 30 sheets a month....that savings adds up.

+1 to what Jeff said... maybe even feed less on the same schedule. I feed nori from the local grocery store and 1 or 2 sheets about 3"- 4" square are gone in under 2 minutes.

I buy the only non-roasted nori I could find at my local oriental market. Here’s a picture of the label.

All the other brands that are there….maybe 20 or so other brands….are labeled as being roasted. Supposedly the roasting process lowers the nutrition level.
This brand does not get bloaty with time in the tank….although it typically only lasts less than five minutes.
I feed two quarter sheets per day that are folded twice over and cut into small strips once clipped into the algae clip:

As stated earlier, the thin strips are just the right size for them to nibble the whole thing. If you don’t cut the thin strips, they pull off a whole square that just ends up floating around the tank.
They love this stuff.

That looks like WAY too much work!
Some brands of nori are better than others. Some brands hold together better than others. You just need to experiment until you find one you like. Just get the dry roasted stuff. Make sure the ingredients list only has "Seaweed" listed. Some brands have oil and other ingredients.
I put two 2x8 inch (folded into 2x2) sheets in my tank every morning. The first is usually gone before I get the second one in the tank. If it's lasting more than ten minutes, you are either overfeeding or they don't like the taste.

+1 to what has been said.
Try to avoid ones that have been "cooked" or "roasted" although this might be hard to do, especially with a food grade product.
Second avoid ones that have salts or oils...
I really like the shredding idea...a nice high quality clip and folding though will go a long ways towards not having chunks flying all around your reef though.
