I just set up a new 120 (48 x 24 x 24) and without any deliberate plan, stocked it with entirely black and white fish. I've got more colorful and sensitive fish and corals waiting for the tank to mature, but for now, here's what I've got:

IMO, thats pretty cool! what 'more colorful and sensitive fish' do you have planned, out of curiosity?

A pair of black and white clowns would be awesome as well.

I've would like a pair of target mandarins--I already have the male in another tank and he's fat and sassy. I'd also like a pair of two spot gobies--again, I already have one in another tank. Both these fish require mature sand beds and rocks, although my mandarin is ORA and does eat frozen. I'd also like two or three red spot cardinals, which I believe are not easy keepers, but are also black and white other than the single red spot on the tail. That's pretty much it.

I keep ultra-passive tanks.

And you just happen to have a Boston Terrier too (avatar)

Coincidence? :).

Good grief--I forgot about the mutts! I have two, actually. So much for leading a life of introspection...

haha, a life of black and white. love the avatar by the way- I have a boston too. great dog, other than some pretty bad dog aggression (which is more our fault than hers, really). also pretty food-obsessive, which seems to be a trait of the breed.

We found ourselves in the same spot: 2 orbic cardinals, a 6-spot goby, and (the only color) an orange-spot goby. It's also a peaceful tank. We pronounced ourselves boring when we realized what we'd done, so we put in lots of corals LOL.

I actually more enjoy the "anti" average reef you have going on! Keep with it! Avoid the urge to follow the herd, be stronger than I!

It's a Zen thing ;)

I should admit that the tank isn't completely black and white. Since it's only 8 weeks old, it's also covered with green algae and red/brown diatoms. Nice and colorful!

As soon as things stabilize, I'll start adding coral and colorful inverts. I think that will create a great backdrop for my b&w fish.

Here's a picture of my Hasselt's goby. This is one of my favorite fish, and I don't know why they aren't more popular...

They are wonderful dogs. My male has gotten slightly more dog aggressive as he's aged, but it's mostly just posturing. He's a marshmellow, and in 6 years, I've never heard him growl. However, like a lot of other bts, he also is obsessed with food. I caught him eating coffee grounds off the floor the other day after I spilled them. He had a horrible, pained expression on his face, but kept eating them anyway. My female BT doesn't care a whit about food.

I call this my crime scene photo, because it looks like someone ought to draw a chalk outline around them:

saw that dottyback too, pretty awsome (and mean!) looking fish. I can already hear the non-reefers comments now- "why do you have that weird looking fish? it isnt even colorful!"

to jayelblock, that hasslet's goby is pretty cool. awesome color pattern, love the mottling; I'd never heard of them before. easy to get eating?

I do like it, but dottybacks can be cranky.

I like this even better. Not strictly black and white, but gives the same feel:

Moonstream,
Hasselt's are very easy keepers. They eat larger food that falls to the bottom like mysis, Rod's, pellets, and similar. They do not feed from the water column, so they don't compete with my slow swimming cardinals, and they don't pick at pods, so they don't compete with the mandarin. I think they're nearly perfect if you want a totally passive fish that's a great scavenger.

Don't forget to have an odd one out that completely clashes like royal gramma, blackcap basslet , or green mandarin. Cool fish!
