I have a 20G that has been set up for about 3 months.. Right now im fishless with some softies and LPS corals (I added a chromis after my cycle but it was such a pig and was getting big fast so I traded him for a candycane frag).

I cant decide on fish because I know I can have only one or two small fish. I plan on keeping these fish for a long time and alot of small fully grown fish are actually pretty big... did that make sence?:hmm3: haha

I'd like some Ideas on really cool fish, Pics are always welcome:)

Thanks for your time!

A pair of oscellaris or percula clowns will do fine in that tank.

A pair of bangaii cardinals would be another option.

Can you tell I like fish that pair up and have interesting interactions ?

Clown gobies are very cool and come in different colors. I love my 6 line wrasse, colorful and extremely active.

I have a pair of black and white clowns, spotted mandarin, yellow watchman goby in mine. A blue spot jawfish is fun to watch in a nano, lots of personality, just gotta make sure you get a healthy one.

I'm thinking a 6 line, purple firefish, and a bicolord blenny?

Nice tank sneaton

Im not sure how well the sixline and firefish would get along- I'd be worried that the firefish might be driven to jump, or just hole up in its burrow and not come out.

I have 2 pearly jawfish. They're amazing to watch and great personality too. Also have a canary wrasse (aka yellow coris wrasse) they're super peaceful and swim around the tank all day long.

Moonstream, I guess Ill reconsider the firefish. Thanks!

etphi, Thanks for the idea on the canary wrasse, very cool fish. Do you know how big they get? I think I have seen them almost 3" long..

28 gallon nanocube:

Right now I have 2 baby clownfishes, 2 firefishes, 1 azure damsel, 1 carpenter flasher, 1 yellow tang (come at me bro!) and 1 tail-spot blenny. I'm not interested in conversation on bio-overload, as everyone is extremely happy.

Another question is where does everyone buy these fish? My LFS doesnt carry much.. and Im not a fan of buying livestock online

+1 on the flamehawk. Thats my favorite in my 28 gal nano cube. Awesome personality. Also, I picked up a mystery wrasse a week ago and that is the best wrasse I've had. Sixlines get too aggressive IME. Yellow coris wrasse is awesome, if you need a bright yellow in your tank. Cool fish that sleeps in the sand, so make sure you have sand in your tank. As to your answer on where to get them, I dont know. I dont trust online fish either, plus shipping is extremely expensive. I have like 8 LFS around me and they always carry pretty much any fish out there...

Well, I have a pico that i just started 2 weeks ago; Its roughly 5 gallons and love it!! I started with a high fin red banded goby, tail spot blenny, and a pair of small clowns (all are REAL SMALL). Anyways, I am P!SSED at myself or the fish or both!! UGGH! I am down to one, the male clown. They all jumped to their own demise out of a very small hole that covers the top of my tank! UGGGGGHHHHH!!! :headwallblue::headwalls::mad2::angryfire:

At present I have a tailspot blenny, a masked goby, a pair of neon gobies, and three candycane gobies. (29 gallon) I love the pair of neons and recommend them highly, also the tailspot. I also plan to add three or four gold neon pygmy gobies (Eviota pellucida).

FWIW, I despise clownfish, and sixline wrasses. ;)

@ Dixiedog - Why do you dislike these fish so much?

@ Dixiedog - Why do you dislike these fish so much?

Aggression in the sixline, gluttony in both. Their appetites make them unsuitable in nano tanks IMO. Impossible to get any food to the smaller, less buck-wild fish unless you first feed the clown til it looks like it swallowed a ping pong ball. A single clown adds the bioload of a dozen Trimma or Eviota sp.

And forget about target feeding LPS with a clown or a sixline in the tank, they'll rob it blind. Then once they associate it with food they'll come harass it and peck at it whenever they think there's food nearby.

I got lucky with the neons. I picked two at the LFS that looked like they were hanging together, and they've been inseparable ever since. Colorful, personable, fearless little guys, I like them a lot.

The red possum wrasse are hard to find but if you come across one I would snag it up. Here is a pic of my pair of red banded high fin gobys

I have a single orchid dottyback in a biocube 14, he's fun to watch, and fairly active. I tried a hi fin banded goby, but I never saw it. I think if I ever try a hi fin again it will be with a pistol in a pico.

A lot of small fish are still small fish when fully grown; more, a lot of these tiny fish are fairly easily available these days and make a great deal of sense in a nano.

Trimma and eviota gobies are great examples. Fully grown they're still barely an inch, and it would take something like 8 of them to equal the bioload of a single occellaris clown. I've found trimma to be really crappy shippers but once they make it through the first few days in your tank they're hardy, easy to feed and quite attractive. Some species spend all their time perching, but others (trimma rubromaculatus, for example) will spend nearly all it's time in the water column if the flow isn't too high.

Redspot cardinals (apogon parvulus) are another species that work great in nanos, although they too are known for high shipping mortality.

Tiger gobies (elacatinus macrodon) stay small but grow slightly larger than trimma gobies do, perhaps to 1.3" or so. Practically unkillable, attractively patterned and with entertaining personalities, these guys are available captive bred from ORA. They also are gluttonous pigs who eat just about anything, and are better at finding leftover food and consuming it than hermit crabs.

The flaming prawn goby is pricey, but tops off at just under an inch. It's small size and incredible coloration pretty much demand being kept in a small tank to appreciate it fully.

All of these will peacefully co-exist with animals like sexy shrimp and pom-pom (boxer) crabs that often have a hard time with fish even as small as clowns and firefish, so they have that going for them as well.

In my 30 gallon I have a pair of clownfish, a pair of bangaii cardinals, a sixline, and a white tail pacific pygmy angel. The sixline used to be an absolute menace to the angel when the angel was small, but now that they are even and the angel and become bold enough to attack the sixline back, everyone gets along and there is really no aggression.
