I want to upgrade my 10G holding tank to a 20G. This would mean I need to double the water volume, effectively giving the system a 50% water change. Is this OK? Should I be extra careful and make it a shallow 20 gallon by just filling the tank with all of the original water and then slowly adding the new stuff? or should I just go for it?

the tank currently has a ton of SPS, softies, and 6 baby ocellaris. I do not want any casualties.

It's fine. Just make sure the water temperature and PH are about the same. I've done many water changes, much larger than that with no problems.

If you want to be extra careful (as you have SPS), match the KH and Mg too. You should get a bigger upgrade if you plan to keep your 6 growing clownfish.
