hi, can u guys please weigh in on a suitable return pump for 125 gallon (72 by 18) tank.

i'm down to 3 choices: eheim 1262, mag 9.5 or blueline 40 hd-x.

thanks!

I like Eheim quite a bit; depending on how far it has to travel, you might need a more powerful model.

Is the pump going in the sump inside the stand or basement sump? I run a gen-x pcx40 from the basement on my 125.

I have a quiet one 4000 and a mag 7....I like the quiet one a little better.

I vote for the eheim out of that group, assuming you are just circulating water through your sump and not counting on it for flow in the tank (which is correct in my opinion)

i am using eheim 1260 on my 100g(60x18).its wide open and it works great!

I have a mag 12 on mine but I have it dialed back lol. I'd go with the mag 9.5

hi , yes it's gonna be in the stand, so i guess totall length would be about 7'--4 vertical and 3 horizontal

Always liked eheim for reliability

I run two 1260 on my 125g.

They are not silent, a definite hum, particularly two of them. But hard to beat the reliability.

Are they plumbed with hard PVC or vinyl tubing? My 1260 is silent. I would definitely recommend Eheim. They make a good pump.

one other thing . the eheim 1262--i think it can be used internally or externally?

what do u guys recommend?

i know internal can raise water temp. but external fear is if a leak is sprung..ouch

which way to go?

always internal, leak possibility 0, won't notice much heat if any in a 125.cooler than the mag.

i got a mag 12 on mine but the return water also goes to my media reactor, UV sterlizer, chiller, and for additional flow. by doing all of this i didn't have to dial back because i need all of the flow i can get.

Your tank and mine are simillar. You and I have 2 overflows, max cap at 750 gph each, for a total cap of 1500 gph. You want to shoot for a pump with around 900-1100 gph at 4 feet head. Anything more is noisy. The eheim 1262 is rated at 665 at 4 feet. I currently use a pump that gets 750 gph at 4 feet. Not enough IMO. You could get two of the Eheim 1262. The Danner Mag 9.5 puts out 800gph at 4 feet. I would rather get the Mag 12, and either run it full or throttle back a little. In fact, I think that's what I'll upgrade to for myself.

My house ambient temp is 76, I have 3 MH lamps, an assortment of pumps in my sump running the return, the reactors and the refugium. Tank temp is 78-80. No need to worry about heat from the pump. I even use heaters for nighttime when the lights sre out.

I have a 110 with 2 overflows. I use the Eheim 1260, in sump, with tubing. I think you will be fine with the 1260 plus powerheads in the tank for flow rather than using a high volume return pump.

I screwed a hose barb fitting (http://www.aquacave.com/male-adapter...nsert-771.html) into the bulkhead fitting, put the tubing on and ran it straight into the sump. The tubing runs from each overflow to the sump separately.

I ran a 3" piece of tubing from my Eheim pump to this Y fitting - http://www.aquacave.com/y-hose-barb-...tors-1214.html - and then tubing from each end of the Y to the return pipes at the base of the overflow box, using the same type of hose barb fitting (http://www.aquacave.com/male-adapter...nsert-771.html). All connections except at the bottom of my overflow boxes are in the sump in case of a leak.

Make sure you keep the water return loc line tubing near the surface of your tank. I use a Y at the end of mine to diffuse the flow - http://www.aquacave.com/searchresult...CategoryID=200 - and point the ends down but keep them near the surface. This limits the amount of water that can siphon back into your sump when the pump shuts off. There is a hole in the throat of the 90 degree fitting at the top of your water return standpipe. You need to make sure this hole stays clear because it breaks the siphon when your return pump shuts off, but you don't want your plumbing to be able to siphon more water than the sump will hold in any event as the next stop is water on the floor.

I have used hard piping and union joints and ball valves and check valves, with the pump outside the sump, in the past and don't see the need or benefit.

For this I would go with the Eheim 1262 inside the sump.

i.mo you should be running any one of those pumps at full capacity on a 125 gallon tank . the blueline is only 1200 gph or so , but it will push it through whatever you hook it to . if you have the room i say blueline !!! i think it uses less wattage than the mag and its twice the pump

MarkGP

I agree it is twice the pump but for an in stand sump that blueline will be a little loud. If you want quiet go with the Eheim. If you want a really good external pump and don't care about noise then go with the blueline!

Looking for a small footprint return pump for a 120gallon DT with only a 24x12x16 sump. I have a CPR overflow box, as the DT is not pre-drilled and the sump is also not drilled.

Space in the aquarium stand severly limited the size of sump I could run so this is my constraint. I am also needing the return pump to be very quite as the DT is in our bedroom.

I read the Eheim 1262 is a great pump but it is not a small footprint for an internal pump. Not sure If I should get the sump tank drilled for an external but there isn't much room in the cabinet (about 26Lx20W)

Any suggestions ?
