Sorry If you need to move this couldn't figure out where to post and never found anything searching what I'm looking for.

I have what looks like white coralline growing on my newly added Xenia frag rock. And spreading to others fast!! Wasn't there or at least didn't notice it yesterday but today it's there and already the size of my finger. I know it's not coralline but it looks the same almost as if it was painted on with latex paint. Any suggests. I'll post pics asap

I'd like to add - This rock in question has been there a week or more without this mystery white stuff. The white stuff does NOT appear to be hairy, fuzzy, or slimy. It looks like

{Just My First Saltwater Tank & It's History: Started 5-1-11 Cycled and started added Livestock 5-21-11
Current Stats Known: Temp 78 / 8.3ph / 0 Ammo / 0 Nitrite / 10-15 Nitrates

47Gal 30"Tall w/ 20gal sump Total Water Est 62 Gallons
I use 10lbs Lava Rock(sump)
( I know what you all are going to say but i haven't found a reason not to... Because it leaks metals into the water or it's a nitrate factory? Either way the lava rock is going to be my floor for my refugium great for algea to grow on. And I use TAP water well, WELL water because it has these metals and no fluoride or chlorine. Plus it's PH is almost prefect. I've never had a fish die due to water conditions (4yrs)! And even in saltwater I'm new but only lost 2 chromis to my stupidity and the pumps.

40lbs Live Rock over 10yrs old Tons of Caroline, Countless Mini Mushrooms and polyps From A Local owner.
Added 30lbs Cured Base Rock 5-31-11

Lights: 14hrs On / 2 18" Florescent 6500k Upgrade needed I know.

Current Residents: 2 Blue Green Chromis, Blue Finned Damsel, Three Stripped Damsel, Cleaner Shrimp, Lawnmower Blenny, 2 Light Footed Sally Crabs.

Corals Alike: Hawaiian Feather Duster, Haitian Pink Tipped Anemone, 9ish Frags of Xenia, 2 different Frags of Leathers IDK what Kinds yet?}

Is it in places the rock already had coralline? If so it is probably bleaching. Have you changed anything recently like light bulbs? What's your parameters? Alk swings can bleach coralline quickly.

Camera Cord is MIA so no pics yet. And that's not my sig. lol.... Just knew you all were going to ask about the tank..

I don't know any other levels regarding the calcium & alk. questions.... No way to test at this time. Bastard LFS had the master saltwater test kit and said that would be everything I needed, then come to find out there is a master reef kit which has alot more things for little to no more than the saltwater kit...

And no it's not dead coralline. Because there wasn't any there before.

I did change the aquascape a week or more ago. Would it take that long for die off, ect..?

Just an update to future readers. The mysterious white frosting looking "caroline" has stopped growing just days after starting this post. (I'd delete it if I knew how.) And hasn't done anything since. ?? Hasn't seemed to damage, change or mess with anything else just the bare rock.

I would guess calcium deposit. Have you dosed any type of alkalinity, purple up, two-part, etc?

No I have not. I guess I assumed the purple up was just a caroline booster. I have no problem with purple caroline.

And without a good way to test all elements I have been slow with adding elements.

do I need all that? Currently I only have "wild mushrooms(from live rock)" Haitian pink tipped anemone, kenya tree, leather finger coral, feather duster, and a dormant pulsing xenia.

No you wont need those things for the corals you have, just covering the bases
