i live in florida just starting my tank,water temp is between 69-71 due to air conditioning in the house.do i need a heater?what is the best water temp for a reef tank?

You'd like to be in the mid to high 70s. IMO 69 - 71 is too low.

I like to keep my temp around 78-80 :)

I agree, this is way too low, put in a heater and it will fix your problem.

I wish I can place my tank in a way that its at 69-71 by the house air conditioning because I wouldn't have to worry about using a chiller.

mid to high 70s are definitely ideally for the reef tank.

I live in FL as well and have only seen temps that low in the winter. Please tell me what type of AC you have. Wow! That's chilly. You must wear a coat in the house.

78-82 degrees is pretty typical for most tanks. I like to keep mine around 79 degrees.

Agreed, you may also want to buy a chiller incase.

I like to keep the tank at 82 and you shouldnt need a heater if you keep your house heated and cooled to around 75 deg

i was told from 76-78. im gonna try keeping it at 80, i think my corals open up more at 79-80.
or is that just me?

You can always keep a cold water tank ;)

But, as people have said, for the average reef, that is too low. What all is in your setup? Once you get things going the temp should rise for you.

I keep my tank 77-79.
