I am picking up a 12 gallon Nano as a QT for my 55 Gallon. I have a clown goby who is being attacked by my female clown fish. If I take liverock and some sand from my 55gallon and use about 5 gallons from my 55 gallon to help fill the nano can I skip the cycling process so I can save my clown goby?

Get some filter media from your DT and place it into the QT. This way, you are transferring the bacteria.

I would also use all 12g of water from DT to QT.. then just add 12g of fresh SW back to DT.. then you did a WC too :)

Probably will work fine. Just check your water parameters regularly to be sure.

this will work fine as long as you don't have to medicate the tank, rock & sand will leach the medication. i would take out substrate & rock in the future so QT tank can double as a hospital tank.

Why don't you get a breeder for the goby (or the clown), to hold them separately in your 55g.
It might help them grow accustomed to each other too.

u will have a mini cycle depending on how the tank is moved and how much bacteria colonies are disturbed. if u do not disturb the sand bed and expose rock out of water very long and use old sw from ur tank u will see maybe a barely noticeable ammonia spike.
Plain new salt water will be fine: don't even try to cycle, just get some filter floss and change it so often it gets no chance to develop nitrate. Give him a little coral to perch in, never mind the sand, which will import nastiness, and just run it like an oldfashioned goldfish tank. Simple is better. You're going to need to make a choice about clowns, or having other fish. They can easily take half a 100g.
