View Full Version : How much phyto to feed?

I have been culturing phytoplankton for a couple months now. I culture Nannochloropsis and Tetraselmis. For those that culture my average density is about 2cm for both planktons.

I started feeding my system about a cup a day (system specs below) and now am up to 2 cups a day. When I feed I turn off my skimmer and carbon reactor for 6 hours. When I first add the phyto my tank gets a bit cloudy but clears up in about 45 minutes. There is no real "green" tint to the water when I add the phyto, just gets cloudy.

Anyways am I feeding enough or should I ramp it up more? If so, how much more? One of the guys on our local forums stated that there is real minimum benefit unless the water is always slightly tinted green (continuous feed maybe?)

Thoughts?

What are you feeding it for? Not much eats phytolankton except zooplankton.

Zooplankton, Clams, Dusters, whatever wants to eat it. I am using phyto to help increase the biodiversity in my system.

djkms,

You still adding phyto? If so, how much are you adding now? Any comments?

I actually do not add phyto anymore. Things where going great for a while then my cultures started to crash all the time. The effort become not worth it.

I was up to 1liter per day though - a mix of nanno and tetra.
