Hi again everyone, i just got off the phone with glasscages re: a 150 long and they say their overflows are rated at 1500 gallons. My question is:
1. would one overflow be enough
2. is corner ok or do you think center back wall would be better.
i know that landscaping and tank space would be better with the corner but would filtration be better center or would powerheads even it all out.
I have no experience with tanks (just my pond) so all help is greatly needed.
thanks for your time,
christine:confused:

for that size tank, I would either go with two corner overflows, or noe larger in the middle.

what are you trying to accomplish?
I would saw a coast to coast overflow along a short side would be better if you want 3 sides viewable.
I agree that 2 corners is better than one or that one larger center overflow is better than an average sized corner as Bill stated above.
If you share what you are trying to achieve, people will be able to give you better advice!

I am looking to start a FOWLR tank. I would only have the front and right side unobstructed and the left side will be partially obstructed in the back do to the short space between wall and tank. the fish i want are a small tang(kole?) and definitely a dog face puffer. fish i would like to add are a blue dot toby puffer, mandarin, and a goby or blennie maybe. i don't know what else i can say because i am new to all this. i thought since the overflow is rated more than double what i saw from perfecto etc. that one plus powerheads would be enough. Again i have no clue about tanks just ponds. hopefully this is what you were asking for.
thank you

I would say you are probably fine. What size hole are they talking about? I wouldnt max out the drain for safety reasons. If its a 1.5" or larger drain then you are probably fine with that. You can always T off the return or throttle your pump back. I have found that the amount of water a drain can flow is always under ideal conditions - back pressure and the fact that most drains do not run at a full siphon means you don't get the amount they are rated for.

thank you for all the input and advice. they told me 1.5 but i'll ask again to make sure i got it right. since i have no clue are the 2 holes, drain and return, supposed to be the same size or are they different.
10x turnover through the sump is pretty good (some would argue too much), though you'll probably not want to run the overflow at capacity. most folks are going to recommend somewhere in the 4-6x turnover in the sump with the rest of the display flow bolstered with powerheads. I would probably prefer the symmetry of a center overflow if the tank is free standing (meaning the sides will be viewable), but if it's in a corner you may be able to put the overflow on that side.

That is a 6' tank so you would want two overflows. I like them on the back wall, it seems like the overflow boxes take up less space that way. About the turnover rate, I like A LOT of turnover in the display w/ powerheads. I have had great success with clean clear water with 50x's turnover with return+powerheads and 3x's turnover (nice and slow) through the sump.
