i was wondering in the pellets in the filter sock is as good as the granular in a reactor

IMO, no. Simply because in a reactor all of the water is forced thru the GFO. Whereas with a filter sock some of the water tends to find a way around it (path of least resistance).

I would be more concern about the water smashing the GFO creating lots of dust and consequently either irritating the corals or releasing lots of ions back to the water column.

It is not as efficient to run GFO in a filter bag as in a reactor.

I run carbon in my sock just as a water clarifier
as stated above gfo needs a reactor to really work its full potential

I tried the sock first and it didn't do much. Reactor is the way to go.

+1 Reactor. I got the BRS Dual GFO Carbon Reactor. Cheap and efficient.

Actually the filter sock does bottleneck all system water in one spot while having a reactor in one chamber can miss some water that goes directly to the return pump. Do most of you run reactors off the drain plumbing?

I use purigen in my filter sock, and would use GAC and phosguard in there, but as mentioned I think it may be too turbulent for GFO.

I have the BRS reactor, and that has a pump that pushes water through it, while it doesnt get all the water at once like the method you use, it will get to all the water multiple times a day.

I honestly like the thought of media reactors becuase its a controlled atmosphere and there is no risk of it really hurting the rest of the system
