I'm putting up a 120G (48x24x24).. what size sump should be good?

I'm thinking a 25G sump such as http://premiumaquatics.com/aquatic-supplies/ES-RS-200.html or should I go for the 35G model? I like sump space but not sure the cabinet will have enough room.

Also, was thinking Ehiem 1262 return?

Let me know what you guys think.

I have this for my 48x24x20 and I really like it

For a return I'd go with a eheim 1260

A 40 Breeder would be good. Petco has a $1/gallon sale right now. You have to install your own baffles/dividers but that's not hard.

A 120 with dual overflows can handle a 1262, but a 1260 would also work well if you want lower flow.

That one looks like a good option. It says the first section is 12 inches x 14.5 inches. How much room is actually in there for the skimmer since the socks will be taking up some room?

I cut one of the sock holders off since I only needed one and the other took up room. I cut the top piece off as well (if you compare the pics you'll see what I'm talking about)

I use the middle section for the skimmer, and the first section as a fuge.

Depends on the skimmer you have. If you have a skimmer that's a sump saver model in which the pump is on the bottom of the skimmer, it will fit in the first section. If the pump is outside the skimmer body, it will probably have to go n the middle.

Do you put carbons in the foam section?

I'm not sure what you mean? You talking about a bag of carbon between the baffles?

Yep. In the description, it says "Top platform includes foam block
Bottom platform can be used for carbon bag, bio balls, etc".

Looks like a good spot to put a bag of carbon.

Oh yeah. I did put a bag of carbon in there for a while. You can definitely do that. I ended up getting a dual BRS Rx, which you can see in the pic, and now run carbon and GFO through that. There are two platforms in that baffle section.

Curious why didn't you go with the elite model so that it has the built in refug which lets you regulate flow?

Only because the 18" width of the 36" sump was too wide. I needed space in my stand to fit the dosing containers. The other elite would have worked but it's only 30" long and I wanted a 36" long.

I need something no wider then 15"

I got a custom sump from Advance Acrylics, very nicely done, great packaging, I had it at my door from CA to TN on the day he said it would be complete to ship. John was very easy to work with through e-mail and one phone conversation, he recommended we talk once to make sure we had everything clear. I got a 40x18x16 with the baffles the way I wanted, made from 3/8" acrylic with rounded corners. I can get you contact info (just PM me) as he's only selling by e-mail/phone now, no more e-bay...

You could build your own for less than half the price of these. Maybe even a third of the price. If you need help PM me. Im from SD too.

I just bought a 40 gallon breeder, 36lx 18w x16 h for $49.95 at petco, Lowes has glass panels for less the $5 for a 24 x 36 " piece, tube of silicon$9 caulking gun$2 so less than $80 for a bigger sump with the baffles where you want them, for a hell of a lot less than $300

Yup, 40B is the ideal size.

Is it easy to cut glass panels with the hand tools they have at Lowes/Home depot? I have never cut glass before.

It takes some technique.

There's videos out there that detail it.

In a nutshell, you create a score on the glass by using the diamond wheel of the glass cutter. You then take a blunt steel object and tap the pane of glass on the other side of that score. The tapping creates fractures in the glass, which (hopefully) follow the score mark you created. You then move the glass over the edge of the flat table you were working on and align the score to the edge so one side of the score is supported by the table, the other is not. Give it a gentle flex and it should follow score.

The glass I got from HD was really thin. I cracked one of my baffles over time. Next time I'll go to a glass shop and get something thicker. Cutting the thin stuff worked out ok, though.
