Herbie Drain / Siphon Question

on a rear drilled tank (not bottom with standpipes, etc), do you have to have a downward elbow on the bulkhead or can you just have a strainer?

stupid question i know....but wondering if the "u" created by the down elbow is what makes the full siphon possible?

Strainer is fine.

No. The "u" is not a requirement for a full siphon. No question is stupid. :)
