I have a 55 gallon dt and a 20L sump/refugium. I do not have room in my first section to fit a skimmer in because I made my refug to big. is there external skimmers or should i do a hob and hang it on my sump wall. If so what are some good ones that will work for what I have?

get a larger sump, been down this road, hob skimmers are a pain, external are expensive. Just get a Bubble Magus NAC6 and you will be in great shape. I run the same, 60g tank 40g sump and all is good.

If you can fit it under there, and external recirculating skimmer would be a great choice. They are very efficient, and skim very well. Check around and see if you can find a used Deltec 600, they are quite the skimmer. Otherwise, Octopus SRO's and Super Reefs are good choices. No good skimmer is going to be cheap, internal or external, so be ready to shell out a few hundred bucks.

I agree if I had a choice bewteen HOB or external I would deff. get the external. I run one now and will actually never own any other type, HOB or internal. yes, they do cost more but you won't have to little water level changes they are a set it forget it skimmer and do skim very well.
